Anna posted about an indefinite SYC so that she could lovingly help her father with his dental expenses (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....finite-syc).

I am about to join her in that SYC challenge. When I got home from work today there was an email from my oldest brother. My Dad (who is 87) has just been accepted into the Assisted Living facility that he was hoping for. Unfortunately his senior's income does not cover all of his rent as he does not quality for government subsidy. This means that my brothers and I will each have to chip in $350 per month to help pay his rent starting in January.

Bye bye navy suit...bye bye metal-heeled oxfords...until next time...

Anna - we can help each other through this! And like I said, it's all good karma.

Aww; how wonderful you and your brother are helping out your father - I've been to a few of the assisted living homes in the city, and they are very nice, and the people living there quite enjoy it!

I know that they can be quite pricey though - especially the ones that I like (with 24/7 RN support and nice activities and senior-friendly accomodations throughout the building).

Any thoughts about going back to thrifting? I know you had placed some limits on it earlier in the month.

lyn - actually my Dad lives in Cranbrook, BC. The assisted living facility he's moving to is amazing though. I'm so happy for him - lots of activities and outings, as much privacy or assistance as you require, on site gym, library, convenience store - really quite the little community. There is 24/7 RN support, all meals provided, etc. When I flew out to have a look with him we were just blown away. And the best part is the people there are just so friendly and "real".

I'll be honest here Suz and lyn - hubby and I are having a wee look at the finances to see if the navy suit is still a go. After all, he doesn't move in until January 7th so maybe a BBQ is in order before then!

Shannon is that 350.00 each? Or between you? Aged care must be set up a little different where you are. Many of ours are means tested. I hope you can get the suit. I think it's a privilege to care for our aged community (family or otherwise) so I have no doubt you will be very blessed and in your generosity to your dad you won't experience any lack in your own circumstances.

Shannon, Jenava's already said it for me. And the place you describe sounds amazing for your Dad.

I'm so glad you and your siblings can make it possible for him to keep his independence *and* have the all-important social support in this way. (I have too many contrasting pictures in my mind of what we call 'old age homes' and worse, here in India... and I haven't words enough to say how delightfully different the picture you paint sounded.)

As for the suit, and the boots --- well, perhaps karma has its own rewards for you! And they may even be better than a boot! Who knows? You can't but be blessed for the wonderful woman you are.

As with Anna, you need never fear we'll stop enjoying your fab wardrobe and above all, the creativity and verve and sheer PERSONALITY you both bring to dressing up each day.

Both of you wonderful women have your priorities in the right place! I would drop the credit cards in a hot second if either of my parents were still alive and needed anything. Shannon, I hope you can still get the suit, but if not, you still have an amazing wardrobe to mix and match.

Your heart and your priorities are definitely in the right place. From your description, it sounds like your father is moving into a wonderful place! And I do believe that there is such a thing as Karma and I hope that, for you, it comes in the form of navy suit

My mom spent nine years at a similar place -- she made many friends and was so busy and happy, it gave her a new lease on life. Living alone can be really isolating for seniors.

You are a jewel, Miss Shannon. But we already knew that!
