just got my Talbots coat...and I'm surprised and disappointed

Picked up the box from the inside foyer of our building. It seemed awfully light. So, suspicions aroused, I opened it up and the coat inside...well, it is pretty enough, and has a nice, flattering cut...but it's entirely THIN. It will NOT take me through a Boston winter. This is something I wasn't expecting for a coat that cost, before discounts, over $300. (It's this one, by the way: http://www.talbots.com/online/.....e=cat70010 ) Wow. Even discounted, it still comes in at about $40 over the new J. Crew coat that's arriving tomorrow (it's this one, also deeply discounted, and which has since sold out: http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../49614.jsp )

The j. crew coat was thick and extremely well-made. BTW the Talbots coat was a 14P and the J. Crew, a 12P, and they both fit the same.

Anyhow, back goes the Talbots coat tomorrow. Not even close to a throwdown. I will still give J. Crew a proper consideration and a viewing with YLF judges for their opinions, since there must be other coats out there. But I did like it a lot!

Now I'm really curious to see how others here will be faring with their new coat orders from Talbots.....

Mochi, that is so disappointing that the Talbots coat did not work out. It's annoying that you can't use price as a marker of quality - there is no substitute for seeing the coat yourself.

Looking forward to seeing the J. crew coat when you get it. I must have missed it - did you purchase it earlier, return it and this is a repurchase?

No, Sylvie. It's confusing--I originally ordered and ended up returning the exact coat on Angie's blog, which had a collar neckline that didn't work great for me. It's otherwise the same color and basic cut. This rounded neckline on the symphony coat looked nice IMO and when I was young I had a coat like that, which I was extremely happy with.

And the J. Crew coat is a really well-constructed, thick, durable yet fine and elegant coat. I'm just dumbfounded that the Talbots one was so skimpy. Maybe it would work as a fall coat.

Oh, Mochi, so "plush" it's not? Even though their description said that, sometimes the descriptive words don't match the garment. Don't feel bad; we've all been there and I do hope the pretty J. Crew coat is just what you want. It's beautiful BTW, from the photo. Looking forward to seeing how you do with tomorrow's arrival!

Interesting. I'm very sorry the coat did not work for you. The J. Crew coat is certainly thicker than the (different) Talbots coat that I got; however, it seems impeccably well made. The thinner weight actually works in my favor-in general, our Seattle winters are mild- cold to me, but rarely freezing or snowing.

Yes, I could see how in certain climes this coat would be perfectly acceptable. (It's amazing, though, that the J. Crew coat doesn't look bulky at all.) Glad you're happy with your coat, Kari.

I'm so sorry that didn't work out! Not least because I was so eager to see you wearing it!!

Is it the same weight as the coat Kari got? Or was hers a different fabric? I know she lives in a different climate, of course.

Well that's a downer!

I find some of those j. crew coats to be a nice weight, but a bit too stiff for me. That one is so beautiful - can't wait to see it on. I love the no collar look!

Yeah, the Talbots coat was more soft and supple...but it could still be warm, right? I, personally don't mind having one "nice" going-out type of coat, as I want for this one, to be a little more structured and less giving...I'm not going x-country skiing in it, in other words.

If it were more differentiated in function, cut, silhouette, etc from the J. Crew coat, I might even have considered keeping it as a coat for autumn...but it's also too pricey for that.

Mochi, until I read your post, I was extremely disappointed that I received an email from Talbot's saying the coat I ordered (exactly like yours) was no longer available. From your report, it sounds like I wouldn't be happy with it either. I'm glad you found an alternative at J. Crew. As for me, I'm still looking. Hope you can post pics soon of you in the fab J. Crew coat.
