I've been at home with a sick kid all week. Don't feel like cleaning the house. So I'm procrastinating.

Oh, I forgot about Violet from Downton Abbey! Maggie Smith is marvelous. She steals every scene she is in. I think I'll have to add that one to my TV list.

Most of my characters are, well, if not eccentric, certainly not normal. They tend to be clever, funny (intentionally or not), and flawed. But likeable despite all that.

Elisabeth, I just added Good Omens to my reading list. I texted DD last night and her favorites are: Elizabeth Bennett, Rebecca, Clarissa Dalloway and Heathcliff. We reminisced about how we once spent a whole day in our pajamas watching the Pride and Prejudice series (Colin Firth!!!) on DVD.

Hubby's favorites are Santiago from Old Man and the Sea and Studs Lonigan from the Studs Lonigan trilogy.

Briony from Atonement. I'll admit, I relate to her (and her imagination) too well.

Clarissa, Laura and Virginia from The Hours. Also Richard.
Lizzy Bennet from Pride and Prejudice (somehow I like THIS Lizzy better than the book's)

TV Series
Meredith, Callie, April, Alex and Cristina from Grey's Anatomy. It's taken a long time but I finally enjoy Mer's lines. Not McDreamy's though. I also miss good sexy Mark Sloan
The four girls from Girls. Can't pick just one.
Blair Waldorff from Gossip Girl. Also Chuck. Best lines in the show for both of them.

Very cool question. In my teens I definitely would have started with Holden Caulfield. I'll have to think about now and get back to you. There are surely many, but I'm blanking out at the moment.

I did the same thing once -- watch all the Pride and Prejudice back-to back, I mean.

Una -- Oh! I've never read the Sandman comics, but you reminded me -- Terry Pratchett's Death character is wonderful, too. I should add him to my list. "Reaper Man", in which he's the main character, is one of the best novels.

Irene -- I like Ron Weasley, too. He was always a bit of an underdog, and everybody loves an underdog.

A huge Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables) fan since I was a child. That why I was among the appalled book lovers who couldn't believe the cover that some idiot chose for a recent edition.

Debora, those covers are hilarious! It reminds me of the time I saw a version of Samuel Richardson's "Pamela" with a bodice ripper cover and the back promising a tale of "a beautiful 15-year old maidservant whose nobleman master abducts her, locks her up in one of his estates, and attempts to seduce and rape her." Needless to say the subtitle "Virtue Rewarded" was not in evidence anywhere on the front cover. I often wonder what the buyers of that edition thought when they actually started reading the first chapter...

Although the novel was the "Shades of Grey" in its time, I doubt that today's readers would be as fascinated by the pious ruminations of the heroine. Lots of talk, very little action. Do publishers think this is the way to get books like The Bell Jar and The Age of Innocence into the hands of potential readers? But I have my doubts that the audience attracted by those covers is the audience for those books. LOL

And, Elisabeth, can you imagine how Anne Shirley would view the Lolita-like blonde on the cover lolling about on the hay bales? I know MY Anne would probably throw mud balls at her.
