The problem here was that with the defendant having turned himself in, they didn't bother with any follow-up work, like fingerprinting or DNA testing the gun, the knife, or any of the other evidence. So we had no idea if the roommate had handled it or even if the defendant had. It was just laziness by the investigating detective. The beat cops are obviously not at fault for any of that.
The lawyers for both sides made clear that this was not like CSI or Law and Order or any of those shows - no crazy showstopping last minute revelations, just hard work and facts as presented.
Am now fascinated with the whole crime lab thing, which I never was before. You have quite a job, girl.
