Ask Angie: Need your advice on Ella Moss striped jacket

I am still on the fence about whether to keep this (super cute and comfy) Ella Moss striped jacket. Most fabbers weighed in positively on my post the other day:

But, the tags are still on it...so obviously I'm not convinced! Here it is with straight leg Paige denim and a white and navy tee.

Angie, do you have any insights or styling advice? I'm mostly wondering about its versatility...and whether it works for my elegant/eclectic/arty style.

I think it looks stunning on you! But YOU have to wear it - not me. What is it about the jacket that is putting you off - the lack of collar? If so, this style is fabulous too. Although the photo does NOT do it justice:

Thanks, Angie. I actually love the *lack* of collar on this jacket. It's perfect for me since I have somewhat broad shoulders...plus I think the lack of collar makes it less preppy and more arty/architectural, which is more to my liking. It's SO comfortable, and it makes me feel happy and lighthearted. It's a really fun piece compared to most of my wardrobe, which is neutral and more subdued.

I think my hesitation (besides the price) is that there's a tiny part of me that feels funny in the stripes. Stripes just aren't my normal go-to pattern. I own only two striped items, so maybe I'm just a little out of my comfort zone. This jacket feels "attention-getting" in a way that I'm not used to....does that make sense?

I also worry that it's a little too trendy to have staying power. Hm.

I already posted on your original post, but I don't think it screams attention, especially not in a bad way. The neutral colors and refined shape help tone it down, while still being great.
I also like the one Angie posted but it's much more subtle. I already have a seersucker striped jacket or I'd be tempted! I think you can rock the Moss, though.

Thanks, unfrumped. I'm leaning toward keeping it. I almost bought a striped jacket last year but didn't because it was too conservative/preppy.

This one is a whole different animal, though. As long as I can be sure it's arty/boho/modern and not preppy/conservative, I think I can go for it.

I love the jacket and I love it on you. But as Angie said, you're the one who would be wearing it. I suggest keeping the tags on until the first time you wear it. If occasions come and go when you might have worn the jacket -- but inexplicably don't -- then maybe your subconscious is telling you something. I am finally learning that if new items hang in my closet for months unworn, they will never become workhorses or even be worn enough to justify their place there.

FWIW, the stripey crispness of the jacket strikes me as a bit of a departure from your usual style, but the color and general cut and lines do not so I would call this a baby step difference.

I'm no expert, but this jacket doesn't read overly conservative or preppy to me at all - in fact, it leans boho-ish/arty more than anything else. I think it's a great addition to your wardrobe.

I do think it looks a lot better with the white tee/layering top than it does with black. In fact, this particular jacket might be a spring, late-spring, early summer and very early fall piece only. I can see it with pale jeans (white or light wash), dark jeans, and I can also see it with lighter coloured summer dresses and skirts. That said, I don't see it playing all that well with black or darker colours - so imo, this is a warm-season piece.

I'm not sure about your dominant climate - and I would consider this first before deciding on the jacket. To me, this looks like an April-May-June jacket that can also be worn in September as well.

Having said that - I think this jacket is a real keeper for you - you look fabulous in it!

Well, I loved it before and I love it, still. It does not read as preppy, conservative, or wild.

I agree with VC that it is a spring/ summer item. I think it looks better with lighter colours, too.

VC, Ariadne, and Suz, thanks for your insights about the wearability/style of this jacket. I am now more convinced than ever that this is an arty/boho addition to my wardrobe that isn't so much a departure but a fun addition. And I agree completely that April/May/June will be its prime season.

You all have been wonderfully helpful as I decide about this jacket, and the decision is: KEEP! I'm planning to take off the tags and wear it tonight when we go out to dinner with friends. I've decided that it fills an important hole in my spring/summer jacket wardrobe: the "fun/trendy" jacket/blazer.

I took a good long look at my blazer/jacket collection and realized that for Fall/Winter I have: 2 classic, 1 fun/trendy, and 1 dressy. For Spring/Summer I have: 1 classic, NO fun/trendy, and 1 dressy. This jacket fills the fun/trendy category very nicely.

#1 - fall/winter (classic - trendy - dressy)
#2 - spring/summer (classic - trendy - dressy)

I can't think of a pattern that has more staying power than a stripe - especially in a tuxedo style.
