JFE summer dresses?

I've been looking for a few easy summer dresses and thought these might fit the bill. Do you think they are JFE or should I return. Both are Gap in PM. I like them but am wondering if I've got my "comfort goggles" on. Thanks in advance! (The stripe one comes in a solid if the stripes seem like they are too much? )

I like the second dress much better than the first, but I think it's the pattern. I think the stripes are overwhelming on the first dress and that's what I see instead of you. I would like to see it in a solid color. Does it come in the blue of the stripe? That's a nice color for you.

Thanks, Staysfit! The first dress comes in a couple of solid colors. I may have to order a solid if the overall style gets a thumbs up.

I feel like both of the dresses are too long, and they might be more flattering if they hit at the knee. The looseness, combined with the length, makes them less flattering than they could be. If you want that length, you could look for something a bit more body-skimming (not so baggy).

Hmmm. I feel like they both swamp you. They're both quite long and look a bit big overall. The stripes are sort of eye-searing but I am on my iPhone so maybe they look better IRL.

I tried that second one too kellygirl but felt it was also a little overwhelming - and I feel the same on you about both. Especially the stripes. But it was really comfortable.

they both look too big, too long, and too shapeless; i cannot let you wear these

Thanks, Kirstjen, Janet, Carter, and Tex! I see where this is headed I've been looking for midi-length so it's been tough sledding. Everything these days is so short. I like the straight cut--but I do see that these look like a lot of dress on me!

What Janet said. I also don't see this as the best cut for our shoulders - I have such a hard time finding dresses with short sleeves for this reason.

Kelly I know for a fact that you're able to scout some amazing casual dresses (I swear I need to hire you to find me some), and unfortunately I'm with the others that these aren't it. I see what you're going for though, and if it helps here's what I see that's off:

Length. These are tooooo long, straight up.
Drawstring. I like them, but I think you'll want to have the top blouson a bit around it. These, even if you pulled it up to your waist and tightened, would have too much poof.
Sleeve shape. As Una said, not really the best sleeve shape for us. It can work sometimes. Both of these dresses would probably look instantly better sleeveless.

The second one shortened to knee level would make a nice dress for hot days. I don't like the shape of the first one for you.

Kelly, what happens if you pin up each one about 3 inches? They would still be midi-length, right? I think the length is throwing off the look on both of these. The looseness might be fine if they were a bit shorter. It might be instructive, even if you don't want to go to the trouble of hemming these. Would you wear platform sandals with them? That might make the midi length more wearable, too.

Kelly, this isn't midi length (though you could scootch it up!) but it feels like PJs! And you can wear it with a loose cotton or linen t for ultimate comfort, as I do pretty frequently. Yet with great sandals or boots, it's ready to leave home and look pretty boss.

I think you can do much better, they swamp you! I like midi lengths with some high-low hem, it gives a bit of a structure. I have attached such a striped midi from Gap last summer as an example.

I understand the allure of comfort, but I think they would look better if they were shorter. I like loose dresses in the summer but they need to show some skin so you don't look swamped.

I think the dresses need to be either shorter, or if you like the length, the waist should be defined. Long and loose seems to be too much for your frame.

I prefer the second frock too - the drawstring belt adds a little structure. I do find the sleeves a little snug. But not bad at all (unless they are uncomfy).

@Firecracker: Thanks for the hemming idea. It would probably make a big difference. Not sure I'd ever get around to it though.

Nr. 2 is looking great for JFE. Nr 1 is a bit too mumsy, too high of a neckline to that maxi look!

Un and Aida nailed it. I've decided to go off of that style of sleeve myself, because it never quite works for me. I think that you look fantastic in dresses that hit just at or above the knee. I know you're after a midi length, but I know that I've heard Angie say that for us shorter gals at or above knee length can work best.

I agree with Angie, that the second one is nice. I think it would look better a few inches shorter, and Firecracker's idea is a good one if you would be inclined to spend the time to hem it. I don't think every dress, especially casual summer ones, has to be fitted and figure hugging. Loose and cool can be wonderful!

I get you on short, casual dresses being *too* short, but sometimes regular sized dresses can be a decent length on us shorties, at least I'm hoping so.

I am laughing at the term comfort-goggles. I totally get that. Late to the party but I see you are returning them. Good choice. They seem a bit overwhelming on you. You'll find something great.
