What’s the best way to store jewelry (gold, silver, & costume) in a hot, humid climate on the beach?

Oh that’s a good question. My uncle used to clean my grandma’s jewellery, which is something I never feel a need to do here.

Ohh what a lovely problem to have!
I don’t live in a climate anything like yours, but I have limited storage space. I made a jewelry hanging thing out of a painted piece of lumber and attached some decorative knobs. I’ve hung it in my closet. I rarely wear jewelry but it gives me ( and my granddaughter) a lot of pleasure to view.

I worry about the salty air & humidity, as my husband doesn’t like to run the A/C all the time. Our condo catches the ocean beeezes, so most of the time we don’t need the A/C.

I would be put them in a jewelry box with some kind of desiccant agent like those silica packets. They are available at Amazon and reusable by drying in the oven.

We will have a maid so the good stuff cannot be our in plain sight, like a jewelry box. How do I keep the fake stuff from turning? I bought beaded jewelry, so I only care about the clasps. Thanks

Mine are in trays in a drawer, mainly so they don't become cat toys!

@nenosmom: Your idea might just work. Our closets have built-in drawers in addition to hanging space. I might could hide the rolls underneath my clothing.

We do have a safe in the master bedroom closet, as the condo is a vacation rental until we move in there, but it’s a small safe like you see in hotel rooms; not large.

I save those little packets that come with almost everything and put jewelry with a packet or two in a sealed plastic bag. One of those jewelry cleaner cloths will take care of anything you miss.

@Joy: Thanks! I can’t save packets right now because we’re moving with only what will fit in our luggage. However, I’m sure I’ll need to get some of them once we get there. I do have a jewelry cloth but need a new one.

@Chewy: I purchased one of those pocketed jewelry organizers that hang in the closet. The jewelry will be separate, & I imagine I can put the little silicone packets in there, too. But… it’s not closed. I don’t want my jewelry out in the open, & I don’t know how to hide the good stuff. In other words, the hanging organizer would hold the less expensive silver & costume jewelry. I have gold jewelry that will either need ti go in the bank, where I can’t easily get it to wear, or hidden in the condo somehow. ??? My husband has suggested the small safe that’s already in the master bedroom closet (we installed it because the condo is a vacation rental at the moment). If we install another safe, it will arouse suspicion. Hmm…

We have a small jewelry box that fits into a home safe; it’s very flat. We also have a larger locking box from Wolf with tarnish resistant cloth inside. I use the large one for my inexpensive silver pieces. I think Bloomingdales or Macys would have the Wolf so you can see what might work.

Our home safe is only the size of the ones used in hotel rooms, as our condo is currently a vacation rental. A jewelry box would not fit it in it. We use it for our wallets, passports, etc. I can put a small amount of jewelry in there, but only my gold, as I don’t own much gold jewelry. The majority of what I have is sterling silver, & I have some beaded necklaces & bracelets. All of that stuff will have to go somewhere else, not in a safe, as we can’t have another safe installed without arousing suspicion & essentially inviting theft. I’m trying to figure out where & how to hide my jewelry, jewelry ther than the gold that will most assuredly be stored in the small safe. And I’m a way where it will be the most protected from the humidity. Even stainless steel can & does rust there. I have going through the expense of buying as many non-metal kitchen utensils, etc. for this very reason.

I kind of hesitated to post this, but here it is. Silver will tarnish. Bikes will rust & car tires will somehow get dry rot.
Some dwellings have a dehumidifier along w/ AC; that can help. You can buy small dehumidifiers, but they will shoot your electric bill through the roof. Still, I use one.
After polishing, store silver in plastic baggies; you can add a small anti-tarnish strips, but I don’t know if those work.
I’d probably put expensive jewelry in a safe deposit box in a reputable bank. Keep a written inventory. I’d also be home when the cleaning people come until you get to know them.
I don’t know where you are, but I probably wouldn’t wear the expensive stuff out & about until you know the area.

Our condo has A/C, but my husband doesn’t run it that much. The first thing we plan to do, however, is install solar panels. I do not plan to wear my expensive jewelry unless we have been invited to someone’s home & we will be driving. We do have a parking space in the garage directly below our condo, & it’s a very short walk to get to it. I agree about getting to know the maid first? I have had wonderful maids in the past, but one that stole some things from us (from our daughter’s bedroom). I’m well aware of how things are. We’ll be in Mexico, but we lived in Costa Rica for 8 years where theft is a big problem. I do have plenty of small ziplock baggies for jewelry. I have been selling jewelry on Poshmark, & I use them for shipping. I only have 3 gold necklaces, 2 gold rings besides my wedding ring set, & 4 pairs of gold earrings. They will all fit in the safe.

People steal all manner of things. My grandma’s housekeeper counted the knives and forks when outside people had been in the house. Once, someone stole the plastic bag I had my lunch in. They left my lunch, took the bag. Lol. I was mad. Lol

I don't generally wear silver, so I haven't experienced tarnishing, but I keep my gold in little ziplock bags in frosted (translucent not transparent) cubbies, with a silica packet thrown into the cubby for good measure. Today's not too bad but our summers regularly reach 90%+ humidity...

In fact, all my jewellery hangs in those frosted plastic drawers from Muji - if you're keeping stuff inside a safe or cupboard drawers, I imagine such plastic organisers could come in handy to create or separate out space for small things (i.e. jewellery)? If you have any unused vertical space, you could consider stacking such drawers/ trays to make better use of it? That way you can store things on top of one another in the safe without worrying about scratching them.

@Zaeobi: I do have some nice travel jewelry organizers, & I already bought 2 hanging jewelry organizers for my closet (I took them to Mexico on our last trip). What I don’t know now is the smartest way to hide my stuff. I know my gold & expensive sterling silver pieces can easily go in the safe. I just don’t know about the rest. I wish I had something like a drawer with a lock.
