In loosely keeping with today's theme.

1. I grew up in the 70's and the 80's, in an affluent middle-class suburb of New York City. (Though my parents were decidedly not the type to spend money on status-conscious clothing for me and my sister.) Sometime in junior high school, the "designer jeans" trend hit hard. All of a sudden, everywhere you went, girls were wearing or else pining for Jordache, Gloria Vanderbilt, Calvin Kleins (remember Brooke Shields?) etc etc. So coveted!

2. One summer in Denmark, in 1981, I befriended a nice Polish boy and girl my age. We were all 14 or 15, and I remember Zbigniew and Anna one time showing me their jeans and she also had a matching vest made of denim. It was adorable, but someone (older) told me later that of course they were proud--this was the height of the Cold War, and just having those imported items was a huge deal for them.

3. In my mid-to-late 20's, I put on a huge amount of weight, and ended up wearing elastic waistbanded pants for a while. I recognized that I was getting back to my old body when I could again fit into a pair of zip-up jeans.
