I am confused by all the advice about pocket placement on the web and am hoping you can set me straight.

What constitutes good pocket placement if you have a wide and flat butt and wide hips? Which brands do this well?

For the purposes of this discussion, I want to assume the goal is 'conventional ' figure flattery although I realize that is a moving target.

My two cents (possessing a small booty and wide hips myself):
- Pockets that are neither overly large nor small, but especially not small
- Pockets not spaced too far apart so that a lot of width is visible between the two pockets
- Pockets placed not too low or too high -- I think ideally the pockets should be pretty much centered on the cheeks

I try to pay attention to this, but honestly my rear view isn't my best angle even under ideal conditions so I try to go with "least unflattering."

FWIW, please don't get hung up on the back view of jeans, especially when you don't fully tuck tops

My personal preference is for giant cheek-covering pockets, which probably has much more to do with nostalgia for my Levi's 501 days than figure flattery.

I don't stress overly about pocket placement, so long as they exist and are not too small. I don't know, I think jeans without back pockets look SO weird.

Angie, I never worried about this except with the current shorter top trend and the long corridors at work, I feel like I could use some improvement in this area

I like lower rises (under 9"), so it does not leave me a lot of options.

I am down to my last pair of jeans and need to go shopping soon. So that is driving some of this.

You're after pockets that are centered on each cheek, for the most conventional look. Not too high, low, small or large.

Don't leave sleep over this though. Promise!

I think that individual brands have so many fits that you will just have to try everything on--in other words, I don't think a particular brand will have just one pocket size or pocket placement. I would just check the rear view in the mirror and go with what looks good.

In general, when I'm checking for rear-end flattery, it's pretty obvious when something doesn't work. I tried a pair of jeans on several months ago that looked great from the front, but when viewed from the back, my rear end looked horrible because the pockets were extremely low. They made my rear end look droopy.

I agree with Gigi.
It's so hard to tell from advice on the web, because often these gals try it on their own bodies and they go "See? See how unflattering this particular cut/pocket placement/fabric/color is?"And then you look and look and fail to see what would be so extremely wrong that it should be obvious. I think they often have a point of reference for the ideal rear-end fit that is very specific and that completely eludes me.
I think it's always a good idea to check the back view when you try a pair on, and if you don't like what you see, then pass on the item. A good pair will make your but feel like it's the ruling queen of the world.

Lots of jeans have rear pockets too big, too low and too wide set- I just don't get it!!!! I can see the diff and pay attention when buy even for my perfect:-) DD(21, size 4!). Janet said so well what to look for, but they are very rare to my opinion...:-( Maybe retailers will listen and provide some diversity (bless them for finally providing us dresses and skirts with longer lengths nowadays).
