J.Crew Sweater sizing eta photo -added - update below

Hi all,

Has anyone tried this J.Crew sweater? I brought it home in a regular medium and although I know it's meant to be boxy and oversized, I'm thinking maybe of sizing down. Alternatively, I'm thinking of trying it in petite sizing. Unfortunately, petites isn't sold in store in Canada. I'd have to order online and would like to get the sizing right so I could avoid returns.

Hubs hated it when he saw me hold it up. When I put it on he liked it better but still wasn't 100% on board. I've tried some other cream cabled sweaters that haven't worked. This one is so soft, I'd really like to try to get it right. I don't think it's a typically flattering silhouette on my body type (short, round) but I love it so much!

I have it, too and I agree that the softness of it is very nice. I'm working on getting used to the whole oversized thing. Mine is a size S. I probably could have gone for the XS but decided not to. I am 5'4".

This sweater is really boxy, but I think what saves it is that it is shorter in length. So in your case perhaps it depends where it hits on you -- if it is below the hip it's probably too long.

There are different degrees of oversized and they look different on different bodies. Also it is important how soft and drapey this sweater is.
It would be helpful if you can post a picture - then we would be able to give you a better advice. If you are petite then it makes sense to go for the petite sized as this type of sweater should be pretty cropped to counter balance the volume.

I've ordered a couple of white/ cream J. Crew sweaters, but not this one.

I only bought one crew sweater this fall; it is a cardigan that was supposed to be oversized and after reading the comments I bought a medium rather than my usual large and it is still abundantly oversized! Definitely give a smaller size a spin.

Thanks thimblelina. I bought a pair of drapey track pants this summer where I sized down. Fluid is good on my body but oversized is a little scary

I actually love it on you!! It is hard to tell if the body length is longer in the model because she has semi-tucked, but this is a fabulous architectural shape.

I do think the menfolk sometimes dislike the oversized. Mr. Suz (who dislikes any super fitted item like skinnies) surprised me a bit yesterday by saying he does not care for my oversized sweaters and he was grumping about oversized coats for men. So....

Thanks, Suz. You don't think the sleeves are too long? The SA at J.Crew suggested a long necklace to break up the expanse across my chest but TBH, I like it unadorned. I tend to like simple, cleaner looks although this often doesn't provide the best figure flattery for my body type.

I'm no expert on fit, but do look how this looks on you. I wonder if the size down would be too short? It looks cozy....

I think it is the right size for you - it is collapses around the body so extra fabric does not add bulk.
Part of me wishes to see a petite size. How do you plan to wear it? If over a shirt or with skirts / wide leg trousers then shorter length may be better. With straight leg jeans this length should be fine (I don't like it as much with tight skinnies as in your picture at this length - sorry!)

Thanks for your help, ladies. I chumped and took it back! I tried the small in store and thought it looked better but I guess I'm not ready for boxy and cropped in a sweater yet. Next!

Ah...well...I still think it looked good....but I do see how the sleeves could make it harder to wear, also -- they would contribute to the "boxy" feeling, which if you are not used to, can be hard to take. Maybe try the pointelle merino sweater instead? I have ordered that one and will post when it arrives.

I think this is going to be the best size for you. If you size down, I agree with Jackie and think it may end up being shorter, which may not work well for you.

Suz, your comment about men not liking these oversized looks definitely holds true in my experience. My DH definitely dislikes them. He rarely comments on what I wear, but recently I have tried some boxy and oversized items and his negative response was intense!!!

I actually wore mine today. I am not completely satisfied with my faux-tuckery. Not that it matters, since you took yours back, but another negative I forgot to mention from wearing previously is that the sleeves are a PITA for getting into coat sleeves. I have the lavender merino pointelle mentioned above but have not worn it yet. I was going to do that and white jeans and a cognac belt for Angie's most recent ensemble.

Oh Ummlila, you look great in yours! Funny you mentioned the sleeves being PITA with coats as I had thought of that!

Love it with the plaid skinnies. Looks great without a tuck. I noticed online the model only tucks it a very little at the side.

Staysfit, my hubs is not on board with the some of trendier pieces I buy but at some point his eye adjusts and doesn't realize he is complimenting me on something he had once disdained! I think, though, he'll never like my booties
