Does anyone have this t-shirt - Structured Boatneck t-shirt in stripe?

A decent, striped boatneck long sleeve t-shirt has been my HEWI forever. Now, we don’t have any J Crew stores in Toronto (or in Canada), so it will cost me to return if it doesn’t fit/I don’t like it. I like the style and it’s 22” long which is great. I’m not sure about the fabric and if it’s relaxed fit and I should not size up to M.
Do you have one/Have you seen one IRL and what is your opinion.

I’ve had a couple of JCrew bretons, but wasn’t impressed. Fabric on the thinner side, and cut very T shaped without proper attention to armholes or stripes being matched up.

This is a 2 yo post, but might be useful.

Unlike Carla's, the fabric on this shirt is quite thick. If that's the style you're looking for, I would recommend going with Petit Bateau, especially since you'll have to pay duties. I have a long torso and find this to be overly short on me in a S. I own it but I don't reach for it very often. Hope that helps!

They are also called Marinieres or sometimes bretons. I love them, and boat necks. You can try places like Armour Lux, St James, Petit Bateau, Sezane or even Boden. They are a very classic item so many places should stock one.

n, yes, many brands carry them but they are often too long on me. Some brands like Boden, don’t ship to Canada.

Oh I have the opposite problem! Everything is too short on me! I look for high waist trousers and 3/4 length sleeves to hide that.

Thats such a shame Boden doesn't ship to Canada. Have you tried going on the UK Boden website rather than the US one and seeing if they'll ship from there? They have a Japanese Boden website but seem out of stock on a lot of things so I checked the UK page and they also ship from the UK page to Japan.

You are in luck! They do ship to Canada, the delivery cost isn't cheap but if you ever wanted to put in a big order it would be worth it

If a top like this is perfect in every other way, don’t overlook the possibility of having it hemmed to the perfect length for you. I just got a jersey knit top back from my tailor — she shortened it from a weird not-quite-tunic crotch length straight hem to a curved hem that just hits my hip — it’s so much more flattering! I think it cost about $15.

I don't know the J.Crew one, Irina, but I just got this one in red from Boden. BEAUTIFUL. Very well made, substantial, chic, modern fit. I wrote:

"I've been looking for a Breton stripe in a trendier silhouette, and this is it. Very roomy on the midsection and with an architectural dropped '80s sleeve. The hem tapers a little and has bound side slits so it works beautifully worn out over bottoms. It has a subtle sleeve cuff, and a bound neck too. Substantial rugby jersey fabric, and well made. Comes in neutrals".

I've seen the navy one. I preferred the red for me....but it's gorgeous too.

Angie, these t-shirts look so good but aside from the delivery concerns, I’m afraid they are too long for me.

Janet, I have a number of t-shirts shortened by my tailor but it adds to the price. This is how a simple t-shirt from a good brand might cost me $100Can. A bit more that I have in mind

Irina I sympathize with ordering outside of Canada- when all is said and done the costs can be extreme. Perhaps Simons may suit -they had several striped long sleeves.

@Irina - Boden ships to Canada, and they are fast! (Unless things have changed recently.) You have to order from the UK site. I own the two Boden T’s in finds below. They are two years old and have clocked 30+ wears each. I will probably retire them after this summer.

I’ve had LLBean, and I think I’m going to go back and give them another go.

I like J. Crew a lot for this type of shirt--they seem to always have one in stock, and spring is the season for navy and white stripes! I haven't had any issues with their quality (though I know many others have, as Runcarla mentions, and it's handy that they offer the length measurement, but this one does have 3/4 sleeves? (You mention you are looking for long-sleeves.)

Boden is a bit too long on me from looking at their models.
I went to COS today and saw something that might work but they didn’t have my size in stock. Will go back next week. If it doesn’t, I will try J Crew next.

Boden also do a petite size but i'm not sure if they do them with every style. You have to select the petite fitting on a drop down menu.

Irina, I sympathize — I’m nowhere near petite, but many tops are too long for me, and I do not tuck. I often end up semi-tucking but sometimes it’s just not the preferred look.

Irina, fellow short-torso person here; I'm always looking for boxy bretons! I have a Saint James that I love, but it's definitely a different vibe and I agree it will be longer than you want. It needs a semi-tuck for sure. My best boxy bretons have been from J Crew, a version that appears to be quite similar to the one you posted about, only long-sleeve instead of 3/4. It's held up really well and I'd say it's true to size. My other is a luck find from Uniqlo, which surprisingly is the most substantial fabric of the three. It practically stands up on its own. Perfect length for short torsos/high rise bottoms.

I keep looking at the Boden one with the dropped shoulders, but from the garment measurements it looks like it will be longer than I'd like and I'm not a fan of the 3/4 sleeves. I keep looking at this one from COS, which might well be the one you saw in-store. It looks very promising! I also think the Modern Breton from Everlane might work for you, if any of the colours strike your fancy. It doesn't look like they have a classic navy/white option right now.

Janet! I used to semi-tuck some of my tops but with higher rise in pants and jeans it’s no longer an option for me.
LaPed, thanks! I ordered and returned Everlane t-shirt, it’s too cropped even for me. I didn’t feel fab in it.

COS have some oversized cropped as well as regular ones. Cropped t-shirts are made from substantial fabric and look nice. I’m planning to buy, bit of a hassle since they don’t allow to try anything right now. Have to buy and try at home.
I haven’t see the one in your link, might be be too long. Going to COS this week anyway (to return some sale item I bought).

Irina, I'm not sure the one I have is the same -- I think it might be a lighter weight fabric (I got on sale at end of last summer). But it is on the shorter side and boxy.

The quality is fine -- I wear and wash it quite a lot. I wouldn't say it is great -- but it is perfectly acceptable at the sale price. Nice comfortable lightweight cotton.

I can try to snap a photo tomorrow. It is long enough on me to tuck into high waisted pants but would not be long enough for lower waisted pants. I am 163 to 165 cm (depends on the day you measure) and short waisted but not short in the torso overall because I have a long rise.

ETA, I do rely on J. Crew and (sometimes) LL Bean for this type of thing...and for a while -- amazingly -- Land's End had a short boxy version.

My other J. Crew (the grey) is quite a few years old, longer, not as boxy, but really great for wearing untucked.

The LL Beans are loose fitting, more substantial, a sort of blend between "top" and "sweater" -- but longer than you want.

Irina I'm around your height & body type (short waisted ~5ft3) & found the Boden striped top to be quite long in the body (about hip length) - same with the J Crew striped painter boatneck I have.

I prefer my long & 3/4 sleeved tops to be that way but it sounds like you wouldn't lol Just a heads up
