Jcrew: feel the love - YouLookFab Forum

I've been emailing back and forth this week with a rep from Jcrew, who is helping me determine which size suit to order in the petite suiting. I still haven't decided (need to get the tape measurement out and compare with existing garments) but I just wanted to post a public kudos to them here.

I asked for detailed measurements of the garment laid flat - so I could compare what I already know fits in my closet - and they gave it to me within a day - for three different sizes. This is fantastic service and I'm really hoping one of the sizes is close, so I can order.

My only worry - looking over the measurements provided - is that the back rise for the slacks is going to be all wrong for me. I know 11" back rise works best, but for the three sizes given (0p, 2p, 4p) the back rise is around the 14" mark - great if you have a butt, which I don't. I wonder how easy such things are to alter? I am willing to alter.

Even if it ultimately doesn't work out for me, I want to say that my previous complaints about Jcrew service have gone away.

I've felt the same way about J. Crew service since I worked there briefly over the summer. I would use the red phone in stores to call directly to customer service call centers and "prep" them for the customer, and then hand the phone to the customer for them to give their shipping or purchasing information. I've had so-so experiences with them in the past, and they seem to be pulling out all the stops to make sure customers are happy.

I hope they work out for you!! Which suit are you getting?

I recently called J. Crew to get measurements for a suit jacket and was impressed as well! I was wavering between 2 sizes and was able to order the correct size by placing an easy phone call to get additional measurements, which was great because I didn't want to order both and tie up my money until I returned one!

One thing I do have to say is that I think J. Crew sizes run big (at least for my body type, which is a rectangle). Except for their shoes, which I always have to order a half a size up. I wonder if they lend themselves to curvier forms and maybe that is why the allowance for the fuller backside?

Also, I have a flatter bottom too and I found that the city cut suit trousers worked better for me than the other one.

Interesting, wilson, I always thought Jcrew was designed for slim TALL rectangles! I was in there this weekend, and their smallest size cardigan worked fine on me width wise, but was too long all over. Pity the cardigans aren't offered in petites. But I did try on a few jackets that were cute and fit okay.

At any rate, I'm not sure I will be getting a suit from them afterall.

The jackets are no trouble - the measurements I got will fit me. It's the pants. Favorite fit, which is higher rise, is still too low on me. I've asked for the size 0 regular pants measurements so maybe that will give a higher rise, but then the back rise will be higher as well. Grr. Also worried that they will be too roomy in the hips for me. I compared the measurements to the BR Martin's I have, which are my best fitting dress slacks, and they were, well, incomparable. All over.

On my list next: Talbots, Brooks Brothers. And cross fingers BR comes out with something ...

My impression of J. Crew has always been that they cut for a tall, athletic, narrow-hipped and small-busted customer. Basically a long and straight body type. I like the fit of their knits but am wary of ordering pants and dresses from them because my waist to hip and waist to bust difference generally varies from between 13 to 16 inches. I also feel like they cut their pants with too low of a rise for my curvy body type.

Interesting, I always thought J Crew was cut for talllish pears.
Shiny, I think altering the pants would be fine, I think San posted about how this type of alteration is done - they undo the waistband in the back and cut off excessive fabric.

Wow, I'm glad I found out that it's possible to get that info. Does banana republic do that too? I really hope so. Then again, I'm not sure it'll help, since the main problem I have with j crew is that even there xs is too big. Thanks!

Interesting. I am petite (5'3") and a curvy hourglass (size 6-8) and I LOVE J. Crew! It is one of the few stores where I can reliably find mid-rise pants to cover my booty that don't feel too "old" looking (I am 23).

Malcontent, I've always felt the same way about JCrew: that their clothes are cut for a slim hipped rectangle (more like a juniors' cut). I'm not especially curvy in the hips (with a flat behind), but if their pants fit me in the hips, they're invariably too big in the waist. Skirts are the same way.

I do wish JCrew would become more consistent with their sizing. I have JCrew clothes that range from a size 2 to an 8. Makes catalog shopping nearly impossible.
