Jackets for a short-waisted hourglass

I am preparing my list for fall shopping and am looking to purchase a few jackets to spruce up my casual ensembles. I am a definite hourglass and have always fit the "short-waisted" profile so I am wondering what jackets would work best for me this fall.

I have read that anything hitting high hip bone to hip bone is best and that it is always a good idea to emphasize my waist. However, being short-waisted, I feel that any nipping at the waist on me looks like it hits too high. Any advice is much appreciated!

As another short waisted kind of hourglass I think you are spot on. Don't waste the waist (smirk), otherwise you'll look so much bigger than you are.

One thing i have noticed is that being shortwaisted it can be hard to find a jacket where the waist is in the right place for me. I'm a shorty and often a jacket waist is too low, so the jacket rides up. Nothing a bit of shopping around can't solve.

hmm if the nipping in at the waist looks like it hits too high, then perhaps you're not short-waisted?

Liss, I love the 3/4 sleeve jacket in the YLF store. I am also high-waisted, and it sits in just the right spot for skirts.

I have been buying petite jackets (I am not petite in any other clothing item, by the way) and juniors jackets to solve the sleeve, waist, and low armhole problems.

Thanks! The idea to shop petites and juniors is a good one. Bran888, I am curious about your reply. I often feel that a waist tie hits right under my ribcage therefore I think I am short-waisted, but maybe the correct term is "high-waisted" as Lynne said. Any additional insight on this? What exactly constituents "short-waisted?"

Hi Liss, I'm still figuring out some of this terminology myself! Short waisted means that the smallest part of you is high up, not far from the bustline...so I would think that shirt waists would hit too low if you are short waisted? I have no idea what the terminology for this would be, but perhaps your upper torso is long, which could be why shirt waists hit too high? I might have this totally mixed up!

I am a definite long waisted girl, and often have the problem of waist ties hitting my rib cage (ie too high). I have quite a long rise too - am basically very long torso/short leg proportions

Yes, from your description it's not clear that you are short-waisted.

Like Mo, I find petite jackets to be a better fit. (I'm 5'4", so on the borderline in terms of height, but in my case they tend to work better.)

Waist, armhole and sleeve length are all more proportionate for me.

Ditto on the recommendation to shop juniors! Like Suz, I'm 5'4"; like you, I'm short-waisted. The juniors section doesn't always have the look I want, but it has the fit!

Great, thank you all! After reading the post suggested by anne I think I am actually average, not short-waisted. Regardless, I think I will look at the junior and petite sections this fall to see what is out there for jackets!
