I'm laughing at the comments about those cropped pants because a pair are residing in my closet at this very moment!
I'll admit that I bought them with the intention of tapering them, but, when I put them on, my husband loved them--and he isn't normally that keen on the whole cropped pant vibe. Not trusting his taste, I checked with my sister (my harshest critic, as sisters are wont to be) and a fashionable DIL who keeps me on my toes. Universal agreement with my DH!
But, I think it's a few things that make these pants flattering on my muscular, short legs: first, the pant leg is wide enough to skim my calf without any stretching or distorting so the leg hangs straight; second, the length on my short leg hits just a bit above my ankle bone; third, the pant has a higher rise than some of the other crops I've tried on; and, finally, my footwear of choice is a 1-1/2 inch heeled sandal with a taupey snakeskin toe and ankle band connected with a strip of black suede that elongates the whole leg line. The result is flattering and elongating; tapering would look odd, not to mention the sausage-casing effect, and shortening would cut my leg at a very unflattering length.
So thank you to J Crew for making "Frodo" pants that work for a not-so slender, shorter leg. Just goes to show that one person's fashion disaster is another's fashion miracle. And now I can sport these pants thinking of my favorite set of books thanks to Joy and Elisabeth!
