J. Crew Sizing vs. Nordstrom store brands

I think I am just going to go ahead and order some of the shorts and tuxedo top from J. Crew that Angie has in her "finds" section. I particularly need shorts as it gets very hot around here between May and October, and I like the look of the shorts Angie put in the finds section.

That said, I don't have anything J.Crew at all, can you believe that?

In the meantime, these Caslon shorts from Nordstrom were a real workhorse for me last summer:

A size 10 in the Caslon worked well for me (slightly slouchy fit, which I prefer), but I'm drawn to the J. Crew bermudas that Angie mentioned because they look a tiny bit less 'washed' and a tiny bit less casual somehow.

Having said that, I have a funny feeling that I might need to size up in J. Crew - is this a good assumption?

I'd like to try the J. Crew shorts in navy, green, and maybe white. Should I order a size up from what I normally order in Halogen and Caslon (Nordstrom store brands) ?

No good comparisons, but I feel J Crew runs just a little smaller than Caslon, but not like Junior sizes. I can wear an xs in a JCREW knit top but an xs Caslon is too big.

I have not tried these exact J. Crew shorts, but typically I do find they run smaller than Caslon. I feel like J. Crew does not cut for as much booty as some other brands.

I haven't tried the Caslon brand, but for me, J. Crew runs big - I always have to size down!

I think j. crew is cut for a slender rectangle. I always have to size up in jackets and fitted tops, and am my regular size in bottoms because I have narrow hips. I don't know anything about Caslon though.

Thank you all for such speedy responses! I think I'm going to order my normal size, because I find the Halogen and Caslon Nordstrom store brands to fit a bit larger than normal - so if J. Crew is potentially a bit smaller, it should still fit just fine (I hope!).

I don't like close-fitting or even remotely tight anything in summer clothes - and my Caslon flat-front shorts require a belt, else they'd slide right off me. Thing is - I love them - extremely comfortable, lightweight and cool in 115F temps. Flattering too, at least on me (plump hourglass).

Meanwhile, I really want to try that fab J. Crew tux shirt anyway, and figured I'd get a jump on shorts season by trying those bermudas Angie mentioned while I'm at it.

Marley - I suspected that the Nordstrom store brands (Halogen and Caslon) that I've tried run a bit bigger than the norm, so if J. Crew is running bigger on you - if you ever order something Halogen or Caslon brand, you'll likely want to size down quite a bit.

Thanks Una - appreciate your insight. While I might have an hourglass shape, I don't have much of a backside or ultra-curvy hips either. Years ago, when there was that site called 'My Shape' (not sure you remember it or knew about it), their system called me an "elongated hourglass". That seems to fit me quite well - not a typical hourglass, in that I'm not quite as curvy, but I'm not a rectangle either.

I might as well just dive in and try out J. Crew for a change.

J Crew is cut very straight in general. I always have to size up in their bottoms and even for longer tops that go over the hips. The truth is that because of the straight cut they're not very good for my pear shape.

I've never tried Caslon so I can't compare, but I'd say J Crew is probably a bit smaller than Halogen or BR or something like that, especially if you are pear or hourglass.

Oooh....thank you Diana. Much appreciated...sounds like there could be trouble! Just kidding - but perhaps I might want to size up after all.
