J Crew Metro Coat & Funnel Coat, they both come in red.

I'm looking for a winter coat & want your opinions on these 2. I also want to try the Lady Day Coat but it wasn't in my store. I think it will look similar to the Metro Coat but with the side pockets for hands, which is better, so I will order that to see as well. The funnel coat has a high neck which I find unflattering on me but I can wear the top button undone unless it is really cold. If that is the case I would have a scarf up to my face anyway. The funnel coat doesn't have thinsulate, which does affect my decision. I know some say they can't tell the difference but I think there must be.

I am showing the funnel coat with & without the belt & the last pic with button undone. I'm not sure if you can see what I see without seeing my face as far as the high neck issue. I have a long neck but have never felt good in turtle necks & high necks. Perhaps it is my face shape.

The Metro Coat has an A-line shape & the funnel coat has a pencil skirt shape. I think I prefer the narrow hem.

I will not be buying black, it was the only color they had in the store. I will get red or try camel.

I have a T-shirt, sweater & leather moto jacket underneath.

The double cloth is kind of stiff so the coats don't drape or swing.

The sales associate told me they are getting new styles in a couple of weeks & I no longer have a rush to get one so I think I should wait but want to see what you think of these.

Red coat by a thousand and one percent.
ETA: Yes, I prefer the Metro, I like the style better for you. I think the coat fits very nicely at the shoulder and waist, very flattering.

the funnel to me seems more functional if yourneck tends to get cold. the metro coat is more dressy. do scarves give you enough protection?

BJ the funnel is small, more like a turtle neck & the Metro Coat comes up quite high so I think a scarf would give me enough protection. Hats mess flatten my already flat hair & a pashmina which could be a scarf & cover my head might be good.

The funnel coat doesn't have thinsulate either.

well, metro in red then.

Rae the funnel coat is a narrower style & fits slightly smaller but I have a leather moto jacket, sweater & tee under it. I could size up again ( i fit in the smaller one without all the layers) if I decide that is the favorite, though it isn't looking like it. I want thinsulate & everyone here seems to prefer the Metro. I'm gonna order the Lady Day coat, which is similar to Metro but with side pockets for hands. I will order in Camel as that is a more neutral color. If I don't like it as it seems too light online, I might get the red.

I still vote red, and for the Metro coat.

Well I'll be a spanner as Angie says. I by far prefer the fit on the funnel, without the sash. In red would be beautiful.

I also think you're giving short shrift to the funnel coat. With the collar popped (pic 7) it looks very cool. The sash I'm not sure about--it gives the whole thing the appearance of a bathrobe. The metro coat is great. It's just super tailored, where the other coat to me, being streamlined and minimalist, seems like it could give you either a dressy or casual look.

IMHO, the Metro flatters your shape more, regardless of color.

I like both coats, although it IS tough to tell about the funnel neck one without seeing more of your face shape, and if you are not comfortable in the style (neckline) or lining (no thinsulate) that seems to be enough to rule it out, especially as the Metro looks good. I agree you should hold out for something with usable pockets if that is an important feature.

The metro coat is a bit ladylike, a bit retro. I'm not sure how it fits in with your overall style goals. So that is the only thing that gives me a bit of hesitation.

I like them both. I am not crazy about the color of the funnel coat, but I do like the shape and fit. The red color of the metro is amazing, and I can't be sure that isn't swaying me towards that coat over the other.

I do see what you mean about the narrower hem ... so maybe try the funnel in same color as the metro?

Most importantly, how do you FEEL in both?

I prefer the second coat. I like the nice trim look. Sorry, majority.

That said, the first one is a perfectly fine coat.

I like metro in red the best. I like the with or without tie and it looks more modern to my eye.

It's difficult to not consider the color when judging them so I would like to see both styles in the same color. The red one certainly looks nice but I think the other may look more modern. I do prefer it without the belt.

What is the style of the funnel neck coat? Is it this one, but in red?

I like the shape of the funnel neck coat, but I think the bunching at the funnel is tough. I'd love it if they'd just made the funnel a bit wider! However, if you always plan to wear it with the top button unbuttoned, then I think it works. I agree that I think the straight fit on it is nicer than the flare.

Honestly? I would hold off for the lady day coat so that you have all your options to consider. And I would try the funnel neck in one size up too.

I like the funnel coat, partly because it is more form fitting. I always get cold, and the first coat looks like cold air could easily get up through the more flared hem. But if the funnel one doesn't have Thinsulate, maybe that would negate any benefits you'd get from having a snugger coat.

Red is a great color. I have a poison eye for those horizontal pocket flaps( real or faux), so that's a coat deal- breaker for me, but I'm more hippy. I don't think I like the funnel coat belted. The red us such a factor I might have to see the actual coat in that color. Maybe neither coat is "the one"?
