J Crew Daphne Tweed Topcoat ETA pic of it worn out

Hey all. I got this coat in a size 12. I tried 10 in the store but the button in front kept popping open. There is no petite size to try.

This isn’t really a k/r as really I love this and am inclined to keep. It’s hard to find a long straight coat that fits me at all. (This is to replace a J Crew Lady day coat that only ever barely fit me since it was so straight in the body;
it was a gift and I need to figure out how to sell or consign it.)

I don’t mind the arms being too large - my arms are chubby and this allows layering of a thick sweater or even a blazer - something I can’t normally do at all, or comfortably when it’s possible. I’d love to have a coat that I can layer over a blazer.

The question is whether to hack the sleeve length - I guess it looks ridiculous as is, so probably. love the length of the body of the coat, so that’s one as is. It’s hard to see but the should seam sits in the right place.

This fun tweed makes me extra special happy. The coat is beautiful and well made.

ETA - Decided to keep as is and see how it goes. I’m wearing it today, which happens to be milder weather. Added pic.

Beautiful coat but the sleeves do need to be hemmed. I regularly have to do this and it cost anywhere from
$30-60 in my area. Price depends on type of sleeve, lining, etc...

Molly, there is a satin lining that starts about an inch up the sleeve.

I can wait to decide. It’s a little cold for wearing this right now anyway. I don’t mind sleeves being a little long, since it provides warmth, so may try as is for a while.

Angie, funny you should say that. I was just coming back to say I just noticed my puffer coat sleeves are the same length. So maybe it’s okay as is after all!

Lovely coat and it looks like it is a non-Petite fit win - you always have to try! I would probably hem the sleeves a tad, I like outerwear coats to come between wrist and my bottom thumb joint. Maybe a hair longer than this photo. Otherwise I feel sloppy.

The coat looks great on you and with the classic cut and the bits of color woven into the tweed it seems like the incarnation of your style moniker. YAY you!

The sleeves of my winter coat come to the top of my palm/base of my fingers when my arm is at my side. For me having enough coverage on my wrists is key to feeling warm so I’m ok with it. Plus, sometimes when you layer up the sleeves of the outermost layer get shorter, you know?

If you do decide to have the sleeves hemmed it seems like the coat has so many points in its favor that it would be worth the investment.

I think it looks great— it has a very slight A- line shape which is what I think you see working better than a very straight coat.
The sleeves look a bit long in the photo where your thumb is nearly covered. I agree you could try wearing as- is and deciding. Also you could see if you can turn the edge up an inch, does that look “ sporty” or just daft/sloppy. AND just ask your tailor so you know the $$.
The main thing for me is whether I keep wishing they were shorter so that it takes away the fabness of an item - that’s no good. Then it’s worth getting hemmed as it would be amortized over several years of great wear. It’s really hard to get coats off the rack that fit EVERYWHERE, and sleeve hem is smaller fix.

Wow - great fit! I love the fabric, too. The random bits of color are great. I personally would shorten the sleeves a bit.

I had a thrifted JCrew pink wool jacket and I shortened the sleeves myself. It had cut buttonholes, but even so, I was surprised that it wasn’t that hard to do.

Thanks everyone! I will see how it feels. The nice thing about hemming is that one can always wait to decide about it.

I tried the 10 in the store and was very disappointed when I couldn’t get a 12 online. I checked again a week later, and the 12 had popped back up at an unbelievable price. It was meant to be!

I love tweed coats and this one is super fab on you. The sleeves don’t bother me. I prefer too long instead of too short, and I am usually wearing gloves so I don’t think the length is really noticeable.

I also like the sleeves on my coats that I wear for warmth to be longer, so I would keep as it is. LOVE this coat on you, it is beautiful.

Love that colorful flecked tweed! I think this is perfect for you. Fun? Check. Eclectic? Check. New York? Check.

I wouldn't hem the sleeves very much, because it looks like they hit right at your wrist when your elbow is bent. Maybe wear it around a bit and see if you find yourself pushing up the sleeves or if they feel like they're in the way.

Christina - the coat looks amazing on. Very flattering. Enjoy it. Also long sleeve girl reporting in. I like my sleeves to hit no higher than the base of the thumb fully past the wrist or as long as the first joint of the thumb. Unless they are bracelet sleeves but that’s a different matter. I had a tailor insist on hemming the sleeves of a new Reiss blazer to the wrist. I hated it so much I donated the blazer. Cautionary tale - wear your sleeves where you find them comfortable and flattering. That’s my 2 cents.

Fantastic to find a keeper like this that makes you "extra special happy" at such a great price! Tweed makes me happy and the color flecks in this one make it special and fun. The sleeve length does NOT look ridiculous as is, if anything only an inch or inch and a half could come off. But if that is what it takes to perfect a coat that you are so in love with, test it out as is and think about it. Super, super good buy!

Thank you all! It’s a great day outside, about 47 F, so my plan is to try it as is. You all are wise. I hate wearing gloves, so it might be okay as is to add extra warmth. I think the coat is more tailored than my other puffer, which is why the length looked weird at first.

La Ped - those were my thoughts when I tried the smaller size on at the store. It ticks all the boxes!

Bennett - well wait till it all goes on Sale! There are so many sizing issues with J Crew these days that even sold out items pop back. The sizing for this coat, for instance, was apparently tricky for a lot of folks. I’m fortunate that it works for me, and that the only alertation I might need is easy.

Posted a new pic above. This makes me we happy as my dearly departed bright purple coat did. (This was before my time in the forum - a coat I loved so much that I replaced it years later on eBay by some miracle. But the size wasn’t quite right the second time.)
