Itchy Sweater Help

Marvel Girl

I bought this J Crew sweater in the color shown on Black Friday. Well, it came in yesterday and I love the color and the fit but it's kind of itchy. There's wool and mohair in it so I think that is what's causing the issue. Is there anything that can be done besides wearing something underneath?

I vote return. It's just TOO AWFUL when wool is itchy. I'd be climbing the walls.

You may have a sensitivity to one of these fibers- it's best just to return it.

In all likelihood, it's the mohair making it feel itchy. You'll probably have to return this. Those fine guard hairs will poke through just about any top.

A little about mohair: It comes from goats. Fiber from older goats tends to be itchier. Fine kid mohair can be heavenly soft but sells at a high-end price. Don't write off mohair altogether, but be cautious when purchasing something containing it.

Return, return, return. Nothing is worth the discomfort of an itchy sweater, and if you're at all like me, you'll end up not wearing it because it's ever-so-slightly (or maybe not ever so slightly) uncomfortable. I play games with myself sometimes and convince myself that I'll be able to handle an uncomfortable clothing item because I really, really like the way it looks. Then I end up avoiding it and eventually giving it away. There are lots of non-itchy sweaters in the world, so hold out until you find one of those.

I agree with everyone who says that it's probably the mohair. I have a bit of a sensitivity to it so I tend to avoid most mohair.

I would also vote return. However, if you really love the sweater, one thing that *might* work is giving it a soak + rinse with some conditioner. Wool is hair, after all, and sometimes conditioner can tame some of the itchiness. I admit that I don't know if it works on mohair though!

I love goats-- but I find angora and mohair itchy, where regular wool isn't (there is some nice stuff-- like when we have our fiber arts markets and you can test the really high quality stuff spun right off the rabbits and goats AND get to pet them)

I never owned anything wool growing up because my mother finds it itchy, so every sweater we had was cotton or acrylic.

As an adult-- I find acrylic HORRIBLY itchy.

The conditioner trick does help but really, it's just not worth having something itchy in your closet. Even if you layer, there is always the risk that a patch of it will end up against your skin.

I vote return. I bought a sweater at Loehmann's a few weeks ago and put it on the other day while I was getting ready. Well, after ten minutes, I could tell it just was not going to work. It's merino wool, which usually doesn't bother me. It's in a bag in the trunk of my car, waiting to make the trip back to the store.
