ISO white lightweight knit pullover

I have a very old white V-neck knit pullover — the tag is long gone but I think it was an Alexander Wang top, and it’s something between a tee and a sweater. It’s gotten a bit funky and stretched out (if I scrunch the sleeves they stay super stretched), and I would love a good replacement.

I’m having a hard time finding one! It seems so basic but sometimes that’s hard. Here are my qualifications:

- a crew neck or moderate V neck
- long sleeves (no 3/4 length) but nothing unwieldy or difficult to fit under a jacket sleeve
- for the fit, something with a bit of drape, not fitted or clingy, a little boxy is ok
- not long — slightly cropped is great
- no tight banded bottom
- opaque and not too thin — too many are so thin I can see my bra much too easily
- lightweight but with a bit of body — merino is ideal, but a good quality fabrication that launders well

I have seen one or two that are good in terms of style and quality but too warm and beigey for me. Any suggestions?

Interesting, Roberta! I kind of prefer a closer crew neck, but depending on the details, it’s a possibility. I often find their sleeves run a little short too, but maybe on a sweater like this, that’s not the case. Adding it to the possibility list, thanks!

Uniqlo's lightweight merino is lovely, doesn't stretch out and washes up beautifully. The men's version has a closer crew neck, as well as a v-neck.

I have been watching for a white zip jacket or cardigan for years. White seems to be unpopular as a third piece right now - who knew!

I wrote a response yesterday and thought it posted but apparently not — weird! Lisa, ideally this would be a piece that would later under jackets nicely — no floppy or oversized sleeves. I would likely not layer anything other than a light t-shirt underneath.

Uniqlo is a possibility. Men’s cuts always look good to me, but they’re always too long in the body and too narrow in the hip, sadly.

I may try this one. I'm being picky about fabrication. Would love merino but it's hard to find. Cashmere + white makes me nervous (care and laundering). And a lot of the poly blends feel kind of plasticky to me these days.

Quince is known for their affordable cashmere sweater, but also they have a lot of other great sweaters. I don't know if they have what you want, but they are a good place to see a variety of basic cuts and styles.

Just saw the update that you are looking for merino or cashmere, so I would second the recommendation on Quince.

This from Quince? I can't say anything about it but the short sleeve version is on its way to me. Something about "cotton cashmere" I wanted to try, although if you check details the amount of cashmere is tiny. Good for me in the south, maybe less good for you. The Heather Bone color is the closest to white, but not really white.

Just to clarify, I’m a little wary of cashmere unless it’s a blend. I’ve seen way too much of it that’s too thin, delicate, or not great quality, and white will need more frequent cleaning.

And what do all these brands have against a decent white that’s not so warm off-toned? LOL

White merino is tricky because often see through. I just ordered a white cardi from BR but I expect it will not work.

Lynette, I did look at Boden — their white is warm ivory.

I’ll be checking more of these out. A lot of sweaters are long on me, with banded hems, and I really don’t like the effect of that extra fabric at my midsection.

I do wear off white too. It just happens to be that the specific item I want to replace is a true white, and it’s one of the things I like about it. This is turning out to be more of a challenge than I thought! Haha!

Janet, what about the Spanx long sleeved top in Vivid White that was one of the pieces Angie featured in Monday’s blog post? The color looks to be an optic white, though the top may be too casual for your needs.

Kate, I did like the cut of this one Find, but unfortunately it’s not available in white. I don’t want an athletic feeling top, if you know what I mean, and most of the Spanx tops have that kind of fabrication and vibe.

Length is a huge issue, I’m realizing. A lot of what I see is long and with a banded hem, which doesn’t work for me. But also, the very roomy cuts like Eileen Fisher don’t work well for me either — it’s like they are too unstructured! There’s a fine balance.

PIL, that’s good-looking too. Would kinda prefer a sweater to a tee, but if it’s substantial enough, I could see it working.

I’m putting this search way on the back burner for now, but thank you for all the ideas! I need to turn my full attention to final preparations for my Camino trip.

Huge fan of Uniqlo merino. It wears well, long sleaves and keeps it's shape. It also washed well.
