ISO: Non-black winter coats...

I am looking for a non-black wool winter coat. My black one is lovely (Fleurette peacoat from consignment) but I am finding myself a little too "all black" in winter and looking for a change. Plus, black shows up so much Kona hair!

Colors I'm thinking of are emerald, cobalt, or dark red. I'm also wondering about shape. I love the cocoon coats but they often have funnel necks which don't work on me at all. j. crew doesn't fit me. I'm almost considering something like this CM coat, which is Kona-colored!

Anyone have suggestions or ideas of where to look? Nordstrom isn't turning up anything that I love so far. TIA!

Can't help on suggestions, but I say go for the colbalt or emerald. Dark red is still.. dark.

I do really like the Kona Koat from CM.

I have that Kona coat in my Finds. It's gorgeous. LisaP owns a version of it. Hopefully she will chime in here. It looks awesome on her

It is exceedingly difficult to find non-dark coats. I have no leads, alas.

Oh gosh my tentative suggestion would also be eBay with someone who has a good return policy. Some of my best buys have been off that site

I'm hoping someone around here will try a Reiss coat so I can hear about their warmth factor.

I like the idea of the shape of this other yellow one on you, but it's hard to tell if this would be a flattering color.

Yeah, that first plaid coat is a beauty, but most definitely not winter worthy. Not heavy enough at all. I find that the case with many CM coats - and i have a few. They are great for November, and March wear, if you know what I mean, or days when you're not outside much at all. I'm on the same hunt you are Una, and having zero luck so far.

I know these are made for New England cold, so they should be good here too. They are preppy but I think that's kind of a fun contrast for me. I'm always attracted to conservative outerwear!

I think Sarah has a toggle coat but I don't think it is Land's End.

Talbot's has some, too. And if you can go short -- here's a plaid one.

wow - I actually really like that fuchsia Talbots coat- plus it has a removable hood!! the prices is right too....wonder what the quality is like, anyone seen them? We used to have a Talbot's in Wpg, but it's been gone for years now.

Considering your location, I think you can't go wrong with LL Bean. And I love their warmth rating of -25 degrees. That's a pretty warm coat! The plum color is rich and gorgeous. Great find!

I completely understand the need for a non black coat.
I think a toggle coat is a great idea because I just purchased one.
I bought the navy one from Topshop. I am very smitten with it: it is wool (80%) and is plaid inside. I am very sensitive and haven't found it itchy at all. It has hundreds of excellent reviews. It looks great on.
I am sold on the toggle coat concept but haven't taken the tags off because it is unlined!? It seems crazy to have an unlined coat here. However it is thicker and higher wool content than many of the others I tried on.
I did not try an LL Bean since they are not avl here.

OK, I know this isn't your style, but I tried this coat at NAS and can't stop dreaming about it...I think there might be a teal colored similar coat that would look nice on you...sorry, I'm no help. our coloring is so different I don't think anything I've got in my finds would suit you. But, in case, because you mentioned toggle coat, I'll add this one from Brooks Bros. Might not be warm enough, though!

As I posted awhile ago, very disappointed with winter coat offerings this year. I know it doesn't help that I need an XL. I also have been considering the LLBean Toggle coat but decided to hold out for a coat I love and not just like.

Angie, j. crew coats generally are too narrow in the shoulders, and if I size up too big in the body. But I am open to trying out styles you think might work!

Oh, Parsley, have I seen that coat on you? 4 may be too narrow in the shoulders...

I have a forest green toggle coat, it's ck not bean but looks very similar and has the quilted lining, which is really nice for warmth. If I didn't already have that one I'd be really tempted by the teal bean toggle coat. Anyway I think the toggle coat would be a great bet.

I'm currently looking for a replacement for my cobalt coat. I want a BRIGHT color and something more refined than the green toggle coat. Keeping an eye on this thread!

Diana, that's my idea too... Not sure the toggle coat will scratch the itch for something refined, nor is it UWP/RATE. Hmmm....

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I agree with njw's comment above. I'm super disappointed too with what is in stores this fall . I'm not sure about anyone else, but I need to try coats on , touch the fabric, get a feel for the weight, look at many different options, and none of this is accomplished by ordering one or two at a time on-line . It's a rare occasion to pick a coat off the rack and have the first one you try fit and look good- and i'm not exactly a hard size to fit! I think retailers are really playing it safe - online offerings are good , and the big cities with major retailers are better with real stock, but the rest of the "branch" stores are just sad. I have yet to see a bright coloured , fashion forward or current cut in a good quality coat yet this year - and I've been looking. Winnipeg is a city of 700,000 people so not exactly a small town - but man, there is nothing out there in that magic price point between $400 and $600. Lots at $1000, and lots at $200 - but nothing interesting in the middle.

Una, I got the J Crew man coat while I was in Seattle and I have broad shoulders and it fits me well. You may want to try it. But the Garnet Hill coat does have that UWP vibe.
