ISO: Classic Gold Watch

I am getting a bonus at work, and we are putting most of it to the mortgage. I would love to outright own my home before I am 45, and I am working towards that.

However, I want to get myself a treat as it is a bonus. One thing I am wanting to add to outfits regularly is a nice gold watch. Gold because I think it compliments my skin tone better than silver.

I figure this is the kind of big ticket purchase that I should use a little extra cash for. I still wouldn't want to spend more than $600 or so on it.

Anything you fab ladies would recommend?

Nice Thistle! We are destroying our mortgage too, it feels good, and it's nice to treat yourself with the extras.....I am off to look for suggestions. DH is a watch freak!

No one does gold watches like Michael Kors. They go with everything.

If your budget is $600, you could get a silver or rose gold one too. I have both gold and steel in almost identical styles. They are my go-to watches. They give just the right finishing touch to every outfit.

I don't have suggestions what to get, but I'm going to look at this thread - I just love watches! I would have more of them if I would have the money. My dream watch is the one below - just fantastic (and roughly 500€ over my budget).

What kind of movement do you want? For 600$ you could go for quality and a watch with automatic movement.

Both Orient and Seiko have very good value for money. Some of these are men's watches, but you have to look at the diameter to see if they might work out for you anyway. Oversized is in. Also keep in mind that you can always change bands if you don't like the one it comes with.

FWIW, to me i think it is very important to get a watch from a watch brand (like Astrid recommends) versus a fashion brand that has a cheap quartz movement made in China. Not that quartz movements arent typically very good at keeping time (better then automatic often...), just if I am going to spend major cash on a watch ... i want a WATCH not a bracelet that also serves to keep time. Apparently I vote with Anna's dad here, and am not trying to be harsh. I love how the fashion watches look but prefer the other for myself.

I have two Seiko's 5 series watches (gold/black face, rose gold & silver bezel changed/band to be on a white leather) with automatic movements and two Citizens that use their Solar-quartz hybrid Eco drive movement.

I purchased the Seiko 5's off of amazon (free shipping free return!) most recently. There is a great selection but a lot of duds out there too. Here is what I chose:

Also, at our local watchmakers shop there were three TAG Heuer Watches for consignment in their resale case in the $500 range. If i had an extra $500 i would have gotten the two tone Aquaracer with blue face... But, buying in that situation is an area where you must know it is a reputable shop/authentic product.

We are of one mind, Sarah. My dad thinks similar, I guess I have that from him. My current watch (the one in my profile picture) is also a Citizen Eco Drive. Mostly because I didn't have the money back then to get something different. I do want to get a Seiko next, though. I saw your first watch on Amazon when I had a look and I really like the look, but I thought it might be too sporty for Thistle. I can imagine how the second one has to look with a white leather band - georgeous!

Yes, Astrid. I do see what you are saying re: being pretty sporty. My watches are very dive watch styling inspired.

Thistle, are you inspired by dive watches, or aviator style chronographs, or are you looking for a very simple sleek look? Do you like a gold face or would you prefer mother of pearl or blue or black or white (or another color... although perhaps less classic then) Do you like round faces, or rectangle, square? I have a few other ideas I'd offer too if given some time to search.

I will confess I had NO idea how many types of watches there are. After looking through the links, I really liked the look of the Michael Kors ones, but it sounds like they are not as good of quality as Seiko.

I learned by looking I was pretty partial to the chronograph watches. No idea why as I would never need that! I also found I liked more than I thought I would. Rose gold is really pretty, and this is the first time I came across it.

Honestly, I was overwhelmed by choice on Amazon. I think I need to find a brick and mortar store to see them in person.

Check out a few things in person and see what you like size and comfortwise. I am a bargain hunter and amazon offers a great price (one that even the watchmakers shop here is amazed by and the Seikos i have gotten there are authentic). The Citizen Eco drive line has a number of chronograph styles that look similar in styling to the Micheal Kors but are a Citizen on the inside. As I have a chance Ill send you links. I have had a poor time finding variety in the B&M stores but you can try various shapes and sizes even if they arent perfect stylewise to what yo want. I am happy to search amazon for you (it is fun for me actually!) looking for those preferences. More later...

Some of the ones I linked to are also available in rose gold, instead of yellow. I agree that rose gold is very pretty, although I'm more a silver person myself. I think going to a B&M store is a good idea, to get a feel for sizes and shapes. I would try how big and how small you can go with the diameter of the watch for it to look right on your wrist. Also try the feel of both leather and metal bands to see if you prefer one over the other. Then you can look online and know whether the size would work out or not. But online shopping is a good way to get a great bargain, so I'd definitely check online if you have a better idea what you want! I'd also pay attention to the watch face and readability. Of course it should look pretty, but you want to be able to read the time with a glance and with some watch faces that's difficult. I do like my current one, but it's hard to see the watch hands from some angles (thin silver on white shimmery background).
