ISO a good charcoal sweater - YouLookFab Forum

I am keeping an eye out for a good simple sweater in charcoal grey as a good alternative to black.

My requirements are:

- lightweight but not sheer
- an easy fit — not too fitted and not oversized, it should collapse and drape on the body, neither clingy nor tight nor stiffly boxy
- hip length, not cropped, and not tunic
- a high crew neck — no mock turtleneck effect
- nothing itchy or scratchy — no mohair (i can’t tolerate that), maybe cashmere but not a necessity. I do like merino.

I tried on the one in pic 1 below at Tibi in NYC and really liked it. It’s definitely on the high end of what I would pay, but it’s a great piece. Can be layered over or under, comfortable and not itchy, a great weight and perfect easy (not quite oversized) fit in medium. I have it in a shopping cart online but I thought I’d see what else is out there before I pull the trigger.

I see this one in pic 2 on the COS website but haven’t seen or felt it in person. Any insight? Other recommendations?

I love charcoal. It is a fantastic alternative to black for those with your (or my) colouring. But it's sometimes hard to find in women's clothing. The Tibi sweater looks lovely. I like that kind of envelope style neckline. Super flattering to almost anyone. It seems like an elevated merino tee. Super useful item.

J. Crew and Marks & Spencer do merino sweaters (without the fab neckline) like these but no charcoal that I could find this year.

I have a very old Lord and Taylor merino turtleneck, classic fit, that I will keep as long as I can save it from the moths. Some years I don't wear it more than twice; other years I wear it on repeat. But Lord & Taylor is no more, alas....

Mr. A asked for and received a charcoal crew-neck for Christmas. It was from RL, cashmere, men's but I sometimes like the fit of a men's sweater.

It's called "washable cashmere" but this is silly - cashmere much prefers to be washed.

Agree with April…check out RL. I bought two cashmere sweaters on sale a while ago, and they were part of the unisex line. Maybe too classic for you but I was just craving simple, high-quality. Not sure what colors are left.

I just got a couple of v neck Uniqlo merino sweaters and noticed they also had the charcoal in a high crew neck. They are a nice light weight and unlike a lot of other sweaters I don’t find them itchy. I got one in a women’s S to wear alone and one in a men’s S for a more fluid fit over shirts.

I’ve always defaulted to V necks but am feeling the crew neck more these days for some reason. I like both! I’m also dipping a toe back into turtlenecks but I am very, very picky about them!

Well, broken record that I am, I would suggest TheRealReal, but I know that's probably not your go-to :)! Charcoal is definitely hard to find right now, but hopefully some of these leads will pan out for you. My SO bought a few cashmere pieces from Quince and has been happy with the quality.

Tibi is about to have a big sale! I’ve never regretted any purchase from them. I just wait for sales or buy used.

Thanks, everyone! This is so helpful! Jessikams, i didn’t realize Tibi has a big sale coming up, but that’s really good to know. I really like how lightweight that piece is, even though it feels like good quality. So many things that are light are flimsy or see-through.
