Is this trick to determine waist size real or an urban legend?

Can you really determine if the jeans/pants/trousers you want to try on will fit by wrapping the closed waistband around your neck? Has anyone heard of this? Apparently you should be able to tell if they will fit by how much the ends overlap. It would be nice to eliminate bringing in a variety of sizes into the change room.

I'd have to say, even if on the outside chance this works, it says nothing about hip fit or rise or any other number of fit issues!

Pants ALWAYS need to be tried on. I can try on two pairs same size same style and one will look right and one will not!

Total urban legend. Waists vary much more than necks.

But you can get somewhat of an approximation if you wrap the closed waistband from your belly button to your spine....enough to know whether it is worth taking into the change room......I do this while thrifting..

Thanks so much for your replies. I realize I need to try on the clothes, but I've been getting pretty frustrated when I bring three different sizes into a change room and none of them fit because I don't know my size. Once I can get them on, then I'll start considering the other fit issues Mo identified. I couldn't even tell by holding them up in front of me. I'll try the method Isis suggests next time I hit the stores.

Have you tried bringing a tape measure shopping? Sounds silly, but with a retractable model it's not a big ordeal
