Is this too severe?

More than a couple years ago I saw a street style image of a woman wearing a fitted black leather top and a black maxi skirt. I was smitten and it was etched into my brain. This was before Pinterest. Exhaustive google image searching can't seem to find it. Though I found some similar looks on Pinterest.
I have a black Vince leather tank that's been a bit of an orphan. Today at Costco of all places I found a black knit maxi skirt.

Am I off track, or is more suited to Deborah and Greyscale.?

However if this has been etched in your brain all these years I say do it, do it, do it! A black tank shows skin and is softened thereby. I wanted to wear yellow-green colors for years and thought I couldn't, but now I do and people always say, "That's a really good color on you." So I am starting to believe that what we want to wear, we *can* wear!

I don't think it's too severe and you should at least try it...if it's stuck in your head for that long there is a great possibility that it is right!

You should at least give it a bang. You can always soften with a pretty element like pink or a floral to make it a bit less severe (or curls and a pink mouth).

Oh my goodness, I love this!!! Elegant, feminine, interesting, edgy.......and black!!!
The black knitted skirt/leather top combo is soooooo gooooood. The black tulle skirt might be tricky (for me, at least) to get away with- it's super girly.

I think this could look wonderful on you. As Claire said your hair & make up would be the elements to soften the look & make it yours.

I think it could be great on you. You can definitely soften/playful it if you wish with the color and shape choice of shoes, sunglasses, and bag.

You could absolutely pull it off. I love the hard edge look of leather paired with the softness of tulle or a fuller skirt. Ironic & edgy.

The only way to know if it will work is to try it! I for one think it sounds great, and I would like to try it myself, but alas, I have neither of the pieces. :^(

I certainly don't think so! I love the pairing of edgy pieces with more feminine ones. It creates interest. When I hear 'severe,' I think more sharp edges all around, and if that's what a person is going for, even that can work.

It's a very dressy maxi skirt, so I love it. I think the top has to be sleeveless in order for the look to work - less black all round. I don't find this look too severe at all. It's got "the pretty" and a touch of softness in the tulle, if you know what I mean. And you'll probably add a statement necklace to break up the black too.

I think that sounds great! I wouldn't even think of that combo as particularly severe at all.
