Is this ruffled top dated?

Wondering if this style of pleated bib-like ruffle is dated. It's several years old. Still fits well.

Please ignore the fact that it needs ironing. It's kind of a PITA to iron so I'm not bothering unless we think it's worth keeping.

ETA: color is truer in the first pic. It's a dark warmish grey.

I saw a ton of ruffles at jcrew the other day. Seems to be cycling back. You'll be ahead of the curve.

Wear with birks and loose pants and you're sorted.

It doesn't look dated to me. I'd wear it, if it fit and looked good with some outfits. Or if it helped me wear some things I wouldn't otherwise wear.

I pitched all of mine out over the past year or two. But - I am older than you, and have decided ruffles have no business being on my body. I think it's a completely personal thing - as Angie's ruffle post of the other day pointed out.

I think it's all in the styling. Like Lisa, I think I've aged beyond almost all ruffles but I think you could wear and style this top well, Diana, with a more structured jacket for example.

I would keep it only if it goes really well with some of your current most loved pieces. If it is an orphan in terms of playing well with the rest of your wardrobe, purge.

Great outfit completer = keep
That is my new thinking, so I can step outside of just looking at the item on its own.

cocolion - good solid advice - I am going to heed this today when going through my closet and looking at my summer stuff that didn't get worn (which was 90% of it). If it isn't part of an ensemble or the tightened up look - out it goes!

Denise, I like your way of thinking. I haven't worn this top for over a year but to be honest I forgot that I had it, so I think some experimentation with the other occupants of my closet is a good idea. To Sharan's point as well, I think it may actually be useful largely because of its color. (I have a lot of wacky colored pants and skirts that are best with a more neutral top. For example I think this color would be good with my orange pants.)

BJ, your outfit idea sounds good and if I pair with my slouchy clams it's something I could wear in the weather right now, so maybe I'll try next week.

I'm in a tossing out mood so beware!
But, I hear you on color.
I really like Cocolion's rule and I'm doing more of that. I am trying to avoid impulsive tossing of something that , oops, was the perfect thing that worked with X or Y. I keep all sorts of tanks and belts for that reason. But things that I keep looking at month after month--those need to go.

Ooooh, I'd like to see that paired with some of your knitted vests - I think it'd give off a romantic yet gentlemanly vibe, very Edwardian/Victorian.

You're not the first one to ask this question recently. The colour is great, you can't go wrong with that colour. You say it also fits well, which is also a big plus. I think it can look a little dated, but its always better to have something flattering and timeless than something trendy and ill-fitting... I would keep it if I were you, because these are the kinds of things that do come back around every decade or so...

I agree with viva and Denise -- I don't think it's necessarily dated for your boho leanings, but is it too much of a PITA to work with? Is it great for completing an outfit, or is the ironing issue getting in the way of its usefulness? I don't have a lot of patience for ironing either.

I think it's cute. I'd probably wear it with shorts, for nice casual events, such as a block party, etc. But it sounds as if you like it but don't love it. I really agree with Cocolion. As a thrifter, I would occasionally come across something I really loved. But the new item wouldn't work with my existing wardrobe. I would spend a lot of time and effort making it work. Why go to this effort if you already have a great wardrobe that works?

BTW, I've only just come to this realization.

I'm wearing it today! (With my slouchy crops; too hot for the orange pants). Pics later today. It was surprisingly not too bad to iron (although I admit I'd probably have made j do it but he was out of town). Turns out the ruffles are basically big stacks of pleats so you can press the whole pile at once.
Oh, and I feel like I should add that just because I forgot about it for a year doesn't mean I don't like it anymore... I do this all the time. I'm just disorganized! (And probably have more clothes than I need, but I like it that way.)

Oh, and Denise's idea of buying/keeping outfit completers is brilliant - I need to apply it to my quest for items to make what I have now work better for me.
