Is this Jacket Ruined?

I bought this jacket at the start of the season. LOVE IT. It was perfect for my climate and my life style. I wore it practically every day.

I switched out my winter wardrobe this weekend. I read the washing instructions on the jacket and it is washable! So I washed it prior to being put away for the season.

Well, what came out of the washing machine was not the same jacket. Because it is white, you can clearly see the "down" is clumped together between the baffling. I tried putting it in the dryer to breakup the clumps. No luck.

What did I do wrong?

They key with down is tumble drying it thoroughly, on low-medium heat, with a couple of clean tennis balls (I actually use those wool dryer balls anyway). That should work clumps out.

I don't suppose whacking at the clumps would break them up?
Maybe the stitching came loose, so the down is stuck there?

when you put it in the dryer did you add a tennis ball or something like it? that's whats needed to break up the clumps....and you have to make sure the jacket gets all the way dry....

also, i usually run my down jackets thru a 2ns rinse cycle to make sure i've gotten all of the detergent out....

i don't see special detergent, but make sure that it doesn't have fabric softener etc mixed in...

Oh no! I would also try the tennis balls - you need at least 2 but 3 would be better. Hope it solves the problem.

They have what's called dryer balls- even at walmart and Trader Joes. I think I have about 6 in my dryer now.

I own wool dryer balls .... thanks to previous Forum posts.

Running upstairs right now to put the jacket in the dryer on air only (no heat). I'll let the jacket bounce around with the wool balls for 20 minutes and assess the progress.

Between this and the shedding puffer in a different post, I’m afraid to wash mine now. But it badly needs it before being put away for the summer.

It DID fluff back up. Ten minutes on Air (no heat) with four wool dryer balls. Thank you everyone.

Yay! Dryer balls FTW. I discovered this a couple of years ago with a down comforter and it came in handy when I had some trepidation over washing my Canada Goose Down jacket. Worked like a charm

This happened to me when I washed DS#2's Uniqlo puffer. Thought I ruined it. Turned out the down just wasn't dry enough. Half an hour later and afterwards hanging it upside down and whacking a few times with a plastic hanger. Good as new! I've washed it again recently with good results. Crisis averted!

I'm going to add dryer balls to my laundry room repertoire. Great tip.
