Is This Frumpy?

Your honest opinion, please.

This is a vintage suit from the early 60's my mom passed on to me. I decided to take it all the way with fishnets, Richelieu shoes, turquoise turtleneck and even a flower in my hair. The flower is a button I put on a bobby pin.

Cool! The shoes, bag, hair and fishnets add modern edge. You could also try separating the pieces. Would love to see some more styilings!

Wow Krish, that COLOR is so rich and distinctive and looks wonderful with your complexion. I love it! Was the turtleneck your Mum's too? It's hard to tell where the turtleneck ends and the suit begins, but I have a fondness for this style of suit. I think it has some definite possibilities and I'm sure you will get lots of good suggestions on ways to style it. I can usually only come up with the conventional way to wear things.

And my thumbs are up, up, up for the outfit! It looks like a two-piece dress which is soooooo fashion forward at the moment (all over the runways this recent Fashion Week). You've successfully added the "modern" with your hair, footwear, tights and bag. Well done

it is not but ...proportions... you can hem the skirt a bit shorter or use high heels cause i can see u are a pettite at too much fabric doesn't look good ...or like the other girl say...use it separate not together hope it helps!

Claire, the turtleneck is mine. I have had this suit in my wardrobe for... years! But I never wear it! Because I just don't know what to wear with it. I think I was trying to style it "less" 1950ish, make it "sexy" when it is obviously more prissy. This time, I decided to emphasis the prissiness instead. Normally I abhor myself in high vamp shoes and a skirt that length, but somehow with the whole outfit I don't hate it. But... it's hard for me to judge at this point.

WOW, I cannot get over how gorgeous you look in this colour! (This is one of my favourite and most flattering colours, too, so I guess it is not a surprise.) It is so, so, SO flattering on you. Please wear a lot!

And I love the suit and feel it is a definite winner. You have styled it really well here. I love it with the toned-in turtleneck. I think you could also go with other kinds of on-trend footwear. What is the "weight." Doe it feel fall/winter or fall/spring? Just thinking in terms of what colours might make it feel spring-like if the weight of the fabric allows a spring transition.

Suz, it is definitively a Spring item, more than a fall one. A cool early Spring item. It has weight and it is lined. What footwear would you pair it with?

Hmmm. Trying to think. I am not sure. Did you try it with any of your booties? (I like it with the shoes you chose...just thinking about other options). It could go with white or cream if you had footwear that colour or maybe navy? But it is too heavy for sandals I think - so closed toes.

I really like it, but I would like a different bag. That one seems too casual. I think an oversized clutch would be great.

That suit is beautiful. Colour and cut are fab. I think you did the right thing making it a period piece but with your updated hair and bag (although I think a clutch would work too as Anna suggested). Wear it!

I think this looks very fashion forward and "alternative". The look is intentional and that makes a difference too. Colour is fabulous and may I say you are looking gorgeous.

This suit is beautiful and it looks fantastic on you! I would not choose that turtleneck with it, because I would want to play up the separates aspect of it, but regardless is is a great suit. I love the hair, fishnets and shoes, too, although I love annagybe's suggestion of a larger clutch, too.

Now, Anna didn't prefer the casual bag and I thought that was what helped make the look.
I think you took a wholesome looking vintage piece and made it modern and sporty, as thought you weren't respecting it overmuch. IOW, you weren't bowing to it but it was made to suit modern day you. And the hair is wonderful with it.

Stunning color and excellent tailoring and quality never go out of style. I love the length of the skirt, too. Knee length is more expected, but not as exceptional. Love the hair, too! You could easily style each element separately as well, particularly the skirt.

I must be seeing the threads in reverse order, is this the skirt you showed hemmed in another thread (with the long vest)?

Either way, it's a fantastic color and I would love to see variations of this outfit and individual pieces remixed - it's just too precious not to try and use it. It's not frumpy at all and I think the artistic side of you can do wonders with these pieces.

But if I'm honest, the highlight of these photos is your beautiful smile on #2. Yes, your hair is stunning, but your happy smile steals the show.

This is a different suit from the one in another thread. This one belonged to my Mom (no alterations), whereas the other one that I had tailored belonged to my grandmother.

Angie, I am pleasantly surprised to learn about this two-piece trend. Will you do a post on this? It would be fun.

Bag creates mixed reactions... I purposely used it as I thought it looked like second-world-war mini version of a postman bag, which, I thought, went well with the shoes... But I will certainly also try it with larger purses, as I have a couple in that shade. Thank you for suggesting!
