Is this dress versatile enough to spend on it?

So a dress was on my "wish list" for the year. I had my eye on a nice navy one and it sold out. Boo! I liked this Phillip Lim one which is on sale in the blue/grey color. How do we feel about it, is it versatile across many situations? I do like long sleeves, are these ones too long for Spring though? I prefer the bluish grey color, though the fit of the black one is what I would go for. It went on a pretty good sale now, plus an extra 20% off, but it would still take all my personal spending money for the next month-ish, and put me behind on saving for the shorts I want, so it has to be worth it.

I quite like it; what do you think of the balance between the shorter length and the long sleeves? Looking at the models I want to grab them all and scrunch up their sleeves in every pic!

Lyn I was wondering if scrunched sleeves might look good, and also make it cross over to spring more?

Also, I like the length, seems my dress has gotten too short. I don't know why, but I love sleeves on a dress. Maybe it's my way of keeping the sun off my arms, or I find it glamorous...something about it gets me.

This is the dress where the wearing it will make or break it. But it could be fantastic on you. Would it be returnable? Looks very versatile too.

I love the simplicity of it. You could really vary the look with different shoes and accessoties so it should be quite versatile. What kind of fabric is it?

Shevia, yes I could return it theoretically, but since I'm in Canada it would cost me shipping and I would lose the shipping I already paid, and customs. I figure to return it would cost about $90 in shipping and losses. The dress would be $280 taxes, shipping and customs in. I do what my size would be though, I'm not guessing this time

My thought exactly--I was wondering if the sleeves are wide enough to scrunch. To me that would be a make or break question for a dress I wanted to wear into Spring. Love the simplicity of the dress.

It's a ponte knit dress. Yes I think the sleeves could be scrunched.

Hmmm $90 to return and you can't try in person . . . I don't have enough luck with dresses to take such a chance. I would pass.

It is a nice basic style, but I am not an expert on designers so not sure if it is worth the price. Ponte knit is fabulous, but you can probably find similar ponte knit dresses that you can try on. Not exactly the same, and I am sure the ponte knit is not as nice.

I'll be honest that my LBD purchases, that are supposed to be those dresses you can wear 20 different ways, have not panned out as well as planned. I honestly wore an olive drapey surplice dress 15 times as much as the supposed 'versatile' dresses. ANd the return fees would scare me off.

I have a couple of Phillip Lim pieces and I have been very happy with them.

The dress looks super versatile. Funny, but I bought a similar one by Hugo Boss Orange (on sale) thinking it would be a workhorse and I don't wear it. I think I would wear it more if it weren't knit. I would tread carefully if you can't try on an item like this.

It looks like it has good potential but like some of the others the outlay for shipping, duty etc, without being able to try in advance scares me a bit.

i think it's a basic, versatile dress. i wear my LBD's frequently so i certainly see the value in having one, especially one with sleeves. but the return expense is quite steep so to me that would be a turn off.

Yes the return would be a bit too steep. I have to say, I must be return phobic, cause I never return items. I sort of just deal with them of they don't work out. Stupid, I know.

I am pretty certain the dress would fit fine and look good. It would be great for Fall and winter with tights. My main concern is, with scrunched sleeves would you wear it in Spring?

i'd wear it in spring with the sleeves. (especially in canada!) if it didn't have sleeves, id probably wear a cardigan with it in spring.

I think it's a great dress, but I don't think I would wear it much in spring. Although it would probably be great in winter! I'd also be concerned about the return costs, I don't think I would take the risk.

I think this is a very versatile style and that could be worn many ways - and I adore a dress with sleeves! You can wear it now with a jacket over top and knee high boots or booties with tights and come spring, wear it on its own with the sleeves scrunched, nude hose and lighter coloured booties.

If you're sure of the fit on you, I think it is a worthwhile purchase.

i love the elegance and simplicity but the shipment is horrible ...I think a similar version could be perfect cuz spring is coming u might not get to wear it a lot...plus it's not fun when u go bit over on your expensenses ...on the other hand it's a classic u can use it day/night it's very versatile i can come up with sometimimes wearing with thights, or a gold belt, a moto jacket , sleek pony tail, booties, heels the list can go on an on

We're just used to these shipping / return issues in Canada, eh? It's horrible....

I love the dress and would wear it in a heartbeat, and probably often, too. Assuming the fit is right! The only season I wouldn't wear it here in Ontario is our summer. I think that grey would be beautiful on you. It's one of my favourite colours for myself.

Have you seen the dress IRL? Is the fabric thick? I love the style, but the fabric does give me pause. Knits (not sweater type knits) and high price points always make me pause unfortunately.

Well I thought the extra 20% off sale was until end of Jan, but I guess it was over yesterday. And it pains me to spend more when I know it was on sale just yesterday......so I guess that makes the decision easier. I will hold off. Maybe I'll get it later, maybe ill find something else. Thanks for all the suggestions!
