Is this dress too dressy for a business casual workplace?

I bought this dress today at Ann Taylor, mainly to wear to work. I've been trying to put together a work wardrobe for a business casual small business in California. However my boyfriend says it is too dressy for work because of the hanky hem and is more of a going out at night dress because it is black. What do you think, I tried on a cardigan over and it toned it down a little but am not sure I want to wear a sweater all the time.

I can see why it might certainly give that vibe on its own. But with the right shoes, toppers, and accessories, it will be very work appropriate I think. I for one envy the versatile find!

I see it as more 'playful' than dressy necessarily. I'm sure a blazer or fitted cardigan could negate the playfulness of the hem.

Perhaps California is different than Washington state, but I don't see that as being "too dressy" at all for a business casual office. A lot has to do with the vibe of your office.

How do you define business casual?

Here's how I think about different dress codes for work:

My office dress code is described as business casual, but I think a lot of people nowadays would interpret it as more formal. For me, a handkerchief hem would be too casual for work. I'm surrounded by people in pencil skirts, jackets (coordinating but not matching), and pant suits. Dresses tend to be more sheath-like than full and flirty.

Formal business attire involves collared shirts, matched suits, pantyhose and closed toe heels

Casual business: polo shirts, khaki slacks, possibly nice jeans, denim skirts, knit fabrics

I don't know about too dressy so much as too much fun! LOL I'll wear almost anything to work but I'd draw the line at a handkerchief hem.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I kinda had a feeling but this confirms it. Maybe I'll try a straighter wrap dress instead, I tried sheaths and they don't work for me.

I think going without hose or wearing nude hose would dress it down a bit. Some brown wooden jewelry might also help as would a casual (non black) sandal. If it's cool enough there's always a jean jacket and/or capri length black leggings, which would camouflage the hem. Great dress!
