Is this common practice

I went to Macy's tonight to buy some make up. I found what I wanted and the saleslady offered to give me a 10 day supply and if I prepaid for my purchase I would get a free gift which actually includes a product I want to try.
I went to pay and I handed her cash. She told me she could not take cash on a pre sale that I had to use a credit card. I did but seriously what store does not take cash.

Is this something that happens all the time or is this strange.

I don't understand the 'prepaid' part, are you paying for future purchases of the same product? If that's the case it seems like a credit card is necessary for future billing. Other than that though, I've never heard of a store that normally accepts cash not allowing it for a specific purchase. Weird!

Well, I've never had that happen, but it conceivably could have something to do with bookkeeping for pre-sales. If something were to fall through, they could easily provide refunds???

It's a pre-sale so they will ring up your purchase with the gift on the day event starts. They can't ring the gift with purchase early or they get in trouble. You could ask her to hold it and yo uwill come pay cash that day possibly.
Fairly standard practice in cosmetics counters - we used to have a big closet where we locked all the pre-sells to keep them safe before gift time. Someone will ring them all in the computer early in morning or behind the scenes.
