Is this boxy on boxy?

Okay I am seeing a lot of posts with layered sweaters and button up shirts that look super cute. Supposedly these are "boxy on boxy," but honestly I don't really know what that means. So I tried this look out in the dressing room at h&m with a fluid, pintucked button up and a sage green cotton sweater (and I bought them both). I think the combo looks cute, but does it count as boxy on boxy?

Great question...I'm not sure how to translate the formula into my reality yet either. But either way, I love this look on you. That sweater is very pretty!

I dunno. Your look is a bit more fitted and fluid, but looks good on you, which is the important part

Did you try with the shirt-tails out? And if so, did you like it or not so much?

Yeah maybe I should have sized up on the sweater though? I kinda like it though. tails are too short/sweater is too long for tails to show!

I have no idea, but I've had the same reaction as you! Maybe one of the posted looked kinda looked like boxy over boxy...the rest were nice sweater over button-up looks. I couldn't tell what made them boxy and how to do it myself!

You've said that finding clothes that fit well & proportionally in your size is a challenge, so I wouldn't size up, because there are always bigger and longer sweaters available if you want to go that route later Just my subjective opinion though, what looks good in the moment always trumps copying a look exactly for me.

ETA: ooh, I just had an idea. You could probably wear a cropped sweater in a size up if you wanted the boxy look with shirt-tails showing. You might need to roll or scrunch the sleeves, but it might hit at the waist rather than high above it, and have a little bit of boxy width.

I would call this a fluid fit vs. "boxy" per se - but it looks very nice! And is also on trend.

It all has to do with the cut of the item. Not the size, but the way it's shaped.

The reason this sweater doesn't count (to my eye) as "boxy" is it is cut to skim and show the lines of the body -- the armholes are relatively high, shoulders made to fit on the shoulder, and the length, as you say, is on the long side.

Of the two "boxy" looks I showed in my own threads -- one was a loose fitting dolman sleeve sweater. It had a welt on the bottom, which tends to make for a "square" versus "rectangular" shape.

The sweater I wore today did not have dolman sleeves but is quite loose through the body and also has a welt. It's shorter than the sweater you are wearing, so again, has a slightly boxy appearance.

A fluid fit like the one you are wearing is also fab! I like sweaters like that as well.

Im going to say no this is not boxy on boxy:) Check out Angie's post where she explains the concept. This sweater is fitted and shows your shape. A boxy sweater would be shorter and more square and not fitted to your body. I most examples I have seen the shirt fall lower than the sweater.

But not boxy on boxy. And if you size up in this particular sweater, it might give you boxy width, but it'll just get even longer.

I have this... it may not be quite cropped enough, I have yet to try with a blouse underneath, but I can vouch for it being yummy against the skin, and drapes rather nice...

I like the look on you. I think it is casual but elegant at the same time.

It may not be boxy on boxy but that may be a harder look for you to find. With a smaller frame it is hard to find that perfect line between a nice boxy fit and just looks too big. I often have that problem.

I think Suz and Deborah did a good job of explaining the boxy concept. I like to think of boxy clothes as being cut relatively straight up and down, without much of a defined waist.
