Is there a sensible way to shop online by color?

I would love to be able to search for items in my colors, and this is my biggest frustration with online shopping. Citron is sometimes "acid yellow" or some other name. I am always on the hunt for citron pieces of any kind (what I would give for shoes or boots!), but it is so hard to figure out how to cull it out. Any ideas?

Usually there is a filter menu at many online shopping sites that lets you pick one or several colored squares to filter the listing by. That way you don't have to worry about the name of the color. So for citron I'd select both the yellow and green squares just so you were covered.

I have this issue too. So far I just use shopstyle and polyvore. Yoox, where I don't often have good luck, still has a good search engine.

Sometimes I just google the item I'm looking for with color and then hit images. And yes, polyvore. Again searching key words of the item plus color. I'm always looking to exclude all colors except black, gray and white.

You could try a google reverse image search. You copy the URL of an image in the same color and shape you are looking for, or upload an image from your computer, and hit the camera icon in google images. You will get images that look like that item and you can add text descriptors to the search. You then have to hunt through to see what's for sale.

Doing a simple google image search to start with is a good idea. I usually get a lot more leads that way than by hitting the 'shopping' filter in google.

Yes, shopping on line for color is most frustrating, if. I'm looking for navy I'm don't want to wade thru sky blue and royal. On the other hand, it's so nice to have so many colors, more than a B&M location would have, available. If I'm looking for something very specific I usually try polyvore 1st

Not really, because each designer names their colors a bit differently.
Also the color you are looking for is not trending right now.

Online shopping is a sucking blackhole vortex of time. This morning I was searching for slipper flats... A term used by one - count 'em - one site. Otherwise it was a painful crawl thru 'slides' and 'sandals' and etc. etc.

Right. I know. Not helping!

I agree with the frustration - polyvore is one of the more general sites I use for color but it seems like they may be losing vendors or something as it doesn't come up with as much for me these days. I typically just search around for a bit to see what color "name" is being used, then I search by various terms.

I've never searched for acid green because it's not my color. I do, however, take a look at all greens to find my most flattering shade. I look best in toned-down colors, and can't always tell by looking at one item, so I look at all of the green (or whatever color I'm looking for) offerings at once to compare. If I'm looking for a coral pink (using this just as an example), I look at all of the orange and pink offerings, as I never know how the merchant is going to categorize or name it. This "system" works most of the time. Hope this helps!

Tell me about it, says the girl who's been trawling for emerald green or cobalt blue, formal or cocktail, tea or maxi length, and preferably long or 3/4 sleeved dresses to be worn as her wedding gown. I haven't found an efficient way to sort at all with such specific desires!
