I've been having a lot of luck in this department lately, so I don't think it's too early or too late. I don't really like long-sleeve blouses for some reason, I guess because they aren't as versatile as a short-sleeve or sleeveless that can be worn year round - just pop a cardi over and a cami under for winter warmth.
In fact, I scored 3 blouses at ATL this weekend. They aren't silk, they are more of a woven material, yet still feminine and blousy-looking. For example, this one has a subtle sheen to it:

Depending on your budget, check out BR's Monogram line for some gorgeous, classic silk blouses. Price is a bit steeper for this line though - but they are truly sumptious. I really love this one, but the fit was a bit off for me, sigh... I suspect it would be perfect for anyone larger than a C cup:
