Is it just me?

Or do you find it off-putting when someone answers a sincere compliment with 'yes, I know'....Ive had that happen several times recently. Whether Ive given a compliment
about their looks, clothes or ability to do something really well, some people just respond with that, rather than a simple 'thank you' Im all for women having self-confidence, but I still find it odd....do you?

I've never had that happen to me, I usually find the reverse of 'this old thing' or 'it was cheap as chips'. I think thank you is the best response to a sincere compliment.

I would be a little taken a back by what you have encountered biscuitmom.

Ditto what roseand joan said I've never been faced with that response it's usually the reverse which I also hate. I think a thank you more than covers it x

Yes, I was! Ive heard that from several different women, or I'd chalk it up to a oddball response....I totally agree a simple 'thank you' is most appropriate, although it can be hard to get in that habit....I just thought it was kind of bizarre, and wanted to know if others had that same experience and what they thought of it....

never ever have I had someone respond to a compliment with "yes I know"
now maybe "ooh, what cute shoes" is met with "Yes, I just love them, thanks!" but other than that when I compliment an outfit or such I usually get "thanks"

Thats what I used to get, but 4 different ladies (who dont know each other) told me that recently! I honestly thought..WTH?

it would depend on the context and the intent. was it a "i'm just as surprised as you are that this outfit looks good yes-i-know"? or a "of course i look fab, no need to comment yes-i-know"?

i may prefer this marginally to the litany of how she looks awful following a sincere compliment. you wind up prolonging the compliment event with the follow-up "no really, you look great." that it makes me think the recipient is fishing for more.

No, its been much more the 'of course I know I look fabulous and everyone should recognize this as a 'fact' rather than the other way...that Ive run into many times and dont think much of.....it just seems bizarre to me, cuz all but one of the ladies are NOT knock-out gorgeous, by any means.....

if that is the case biscuit, forget it, I will be put off too...

I might be grilled by being an instigator, but you should try an experiment. Next time, throw in a little honest criticism ( there is always room for improvement) and see what happens. If the ladies involved receive the criticism well, it could be just their way of expressing themselves, clearly being lost in translation.

Thanks, I will try that! I have a really hard time giving even constructive critisism, (I HATE to think I might hurt someone's feelings) so that will be a challenge for me, but Im glad to know Im not alone in thinking the replies were 'odd'! Especially since the ladies involved didnt know each other and all but one are not exactly 'fashionistas'!

wow, that is odd. I've said "yes, I know", or something equally jerky when it's more of a sarcastic or joke compliment. For example:

Boyfriend: "wow, you're awesome at choking on water when you laugh!"

Me (after I stop choking): "yeah, I know, I've been practicing!

Biscuitsmom, it could be that some folks just don't know how to accept a sincere compliment with grace. It takes confidence, class AND effort to project TRUE sincerity, as in saying, "Thank you!" and REALLY meaning it when complimented. Perhaps she is a bit insecure? Just handle these odd comments with humor and understanding. That's what I would do.
