Is it black? Navy blue?

Have you ever had an item that really seems to mystify you as to whether it is actually black or very, very dark blue? The striped shirt I'm wearing today is such an item. I'm out in the bright summer sun, and I'm *still* not sure! I think it might be navy, and I'm wearing it with black pants. Oh well. According to Angie, we can mix the two anyway.

Yes. In my case it's the silk checked Joie pants. Still can't figure out whether the lines are blue or black. But they match equally with both, so at least they are versatile!

I've actually marked tags inside with an N for navy or B for black, but if it blends with both it doesn't matter.
I once had identical navy and black loafers and too often ended up wearing one of each...obvious in bright daylight.

I'm so glad I'm not alone! After all, I'm an artist -- you'd think I could differentiate colors! But this one is tough.

I figure if I can't tell, no one else will be able to either.

Yup! And there are some items that I know are black that still read very very dark blue to me. I guess they are "blue-blacks" with strong blue undertones. I rejoice when I find such items because they tend to look pretty good on me (even though black is technically too strong a neutral for me). My Theory trench is like this. There's really no question that it is black. Yet it gives off a blue cast, somehow.

Yep, I'm thinking this shirt stripe is maybe a blue-black. Of course, I've had two beers with my dinner so I don't know if I should trust my eye right now. Whee! I don't think anyone here has noticed that I keep peering intently at the stripes on my shirt.

LOL Janet. Two beers & it doesn't matter what colour they are in my world.

I have clothes that said navy or ink on the tags that are always mistaken for black. The only way I can tell is to put them next to clothing that is a saturated black - then the blue undertone is obvious.

I think I have an eye for colors, or at least I have convinced myself I do! Lol, but I always argue with DH about colors (argue in fun), because he sees everything wrong. Lol, his hardest to tell apart are light brown/ sage green/ taupy grey...those ones always get him messed up!

Yes, my Suoli pants were described by Yoox (not a reliable witness by any stretch of the imagination) as "navy" but as far as I could tell they were black. The other day I wore them with dark tealish blue shoes and black socks, and they were clearly darker than the shoes but not as black as the socks. So now I am confused again.

Well, I know I have an excellent eye for color so I figure if I can't tell then nobody can and I'm not going to worry about it!

Yup. And like joy, I once had the same pair of shoes in navy and black, and on day I looked down at work, only to realize, I had one black shoe and one navy shoe on. Oh well.

I've had this happen too and then I have to hold the item up to something I KNOW is black and compare it.

My daughter gave me a scarf from BR for Mother's Day. One moment we thought it was black and then another time it looked navy. I later realized that one side was black with the reverse being navy

The only way I can tell sometimes is to place it on a black garment and compare. And I am with Angie all the way with mixing black and blue (navy). It's a stunning combo.
