Is change blowin' in the wind?

I feel a bit of a style shift going on with me - AGAIN! I'm realizing I'm not the kind of person who is going to stick with one particular style long term. I've got a bit of an impatient and adventurous personality and I think that translates into wanting to try new things and I've decided to embrace it.

In the last year I have pretty much stopped doing the retro thing, cut waaaaay back on thrifting (other than accessories), tried some draping (hello EF cascading cardigan), not worn my dresses much, tried skinnies and am trying some volume. Now I've just purchased a pastel blue suit for pity sake!

I'm not sure where my style is headed - if anyone sees a pattern, let me know!

Anyone else enjoy seeing where the wind takes them in terms of their style?

Shannon, maybe your pattern is "embracing change."

I'm enjoying the fact that now that I'm out of the workforce, I can do more RATE looks and so am moving in a slightly less polished direction. When I first joined YLF, I was all about polished because it was important to me in my workplace.

But super polished doesn't make a whole lot of sense when most of your day is spent in the kitchen and climbing over snow banks to run errands. So my pencil skirts are getting a rest and my jeans collection is expanding.

It's fun to try something new, isn't it?

I've noticed many of the things you've pointed out. I read almost all of your posts (even when I don't reply), and I've noticed much less thrifting and fewer retro pieces along with different silhouettes from what I'm accustomed to seeing on you. I love that you're going with the flow and seeing where the wind takes you. So far it's taking you along some fab twists and turns.

I, too, am experiencing a bit of a style shift. My most recent epiphany is that I may have split style personalities. I've decided this is perfectly acceptable, so I'm not calling it a disorder- Ha! I still struggle to articulate what I'm shifting toward, but I can tell you that I'm not as into ruffles, bows, and dresses as I was before.

You sound like me I love to try new things and I get bored with stereotype dressing. Which is why I love fast fashion! I just cannot commit to an expensive wardrobe! Cannot justify the expense if I fall out of love with the item!

Thankfully I have retained my husband of 7 years

shannon, not suprised that you are seeing a shift, after all, you have had 2 major changes in the past year. leaving a job after so many years, and starting a new one, with a new environment, new people, and new responsbilites, i think it would be natural to shift how you are dressing. in addition, with your son graduating from high school, the mom part of your life is also changing.

Funny, I am actually going the opposite way - consistency of style has proved to be a huge comfort for me these days. I hope I'm not stagnating, but I'm just not feeling pulled to the current trends or needing something new by way of style. Stuck in a rut?

Fashion is your art and expression. And style is always evolving. You've made a lot of changes, yet there's consistency within them all. Modern classics with spunk. However you spell it and whTever the details.

My style is shifting too. Look forward to even more minimalism, simplicity, angles, and continued practicality.

I see this as a natural progression of a sort. I think we humans need variety. I was musing as I came in from my walk home from the store (with my mp3 from my run still playing in my ears) about the variety of music I like and why shouldn't style mimic that? Some days are 1920's delta blues and some are gangster rap. For me anyway!

I see your base as modern classic too - so by definition to stay modern you need to embrace change.

April - it is fun! I used to stress about changing but now I'm just going with it. How fun for you to be exploring your RATE side.

Jewell - definitely not a disorder! It sounds like you're going a bit more streamlined?

Neel - I'm not sure if I would say I'm fast fashion - maybe more "mid speed" fashion? And yeah it's good we don't choose our husbands the same way. We had our 27th wedding anniversary this past August!

kkards - I figured my job change might have something to do with my need for a "fresh start" but I hadn't thought about the growing up child aspect. Something to ponder there...

Una - I don't see you in a rut at all. More like honing what is working for you at this stage in your life/career. You've also had big changes in the last little while and some grief to deal with as well, so I can totally understand why consistency would be comforting for you.

Suz - "modern classic with spunk" - LOVE THAT! I think that needs to be my new mantra/rubric. I'm interested in seeing where you go with your desire to become even more minimal in your style.

Mo - love the music analogy! I have everything from Frank Sinatra to bluegrass to classical to heavy metal to blues on my iPod. Maybe that explains it.

Caro - I think you've hit on something really important here..."so by definition to stay modern you need to embrace change." This ties in with why Angie mentions the backbone that classics can give a style persona but the need to keep those classics current/modern.

OH yes - I have noticed your gradual style shift Shannon - and it's been fun to watch - and I can very much relate to your need to try different things/mix it up, etc. I have never been able to come up with a style moniker for myself, because I always felt as though I was changing and there weren't any words for that. The only one I've been able to come up with is "fearless" - because I'm always game to try something at least once! I figure its best to go with it - and enjoy the ride!

I so get that restless, adventurous character trait! I think allowing your style to morph and change is perhaps even more likely now, since you are in such a transition in other areas of life, as well. Bring it on! And have fun!

Shannon- so happy that you are embracing change, mostly because you look very happy and at home in all the looks you are posting. I, too, am coming to enjoy and expect fashion changes. After all, why be on YLF if we didn't want to better understand fashion and assimilate new options? Keep having fun!

Yay for you, I will always love looking at your pictures no matter in what direction you move.

I'm not in your club though. I'm happy with the changes I've made this year, but really hope I can stay here for awhile. Honestly, shopping is not fun for me, so when I reach a happy point, like I have this winter, I tend to stay with it as long as possible. Often too long really, so I will try to look forward more often, and learn from your example. But I'm already dreading trying to find a new summer style.

Your style seems to be shifting to classic lines, but I love the interest of plaid pants trimmed with leather, and the new pale blue suit. Maybe the clean lines and elegant simplicity provides the right image, and a certain degree of comfort while you process the change of transitioning to the new job?

It is beyond 'settling' for what is easy, because you ARE working at the evolution. However, there is a certain joie-de-vie with your retro items. I'm wondering if this was a way to stretch yourself personally, when maybe other things in your life didn't have the spark? Now that you have excitement of another sort in your life, your fashion sense is more about quiet elegance and subtlety.

You are having fun with fashion!... I admire your sense of adventure trying different cuts, styles, colors, discarding, evolving. I also crave variety but am very tentative with new trends. I have worn booties with skirts once, but seeing you rocking this combo in previous posts pushes me a bit more to keep trying to step out of my comfort zone.
