Investment trench coat

Can anyone give me suggestions for where to find a good quality classic trench coat? I'd like to spend $200 or less for a coat that will last a long time (I know in the "investment" sense this isn't a huge amount for a trench coat, but it's what I have to work with). I'd prefer khaki, black or maybe grey, olive or slate blue. My arms are on the longer side and I'm a rectangle, so I'd need some shaping and a belt. Not too big in the shoulders since my shoulders are already kind of square.

It sounds simple, but there are so many out there it's hard to know where to start. Any suggestions? Does anyone own a Banana Republic trench coat? Thanks!

I posted this before (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-gear-coat), but if you want a rain coat trench I recommend the North Face Grace. As I told Patience:

It's very high quality and is definitely an investment piece, and it comes in some fun colors. I have both the Grace rain jacket and the Grace winter jacket from a couple years back and am thrilled by how functional and stylish they are. The rain jacket has been well loved when I'm back in my hometown of Seattle, and the insulated jacket made winter in Ohio (where I went to college) much more bearable. The belt does wonders at creating a waistline, even when wearing bulky layers underneath. Also, if you hunt around online you might be able to find last year's style for cheaper.

Every year Ann Taylor does a Fab job of designing Trenches in a standard black and Khaki and a fun color like red,r white, and brown I own 4 of them in different colors ,weights and fabric sooooo...keep your eyes open...Also Jcrew and as you mentioned Bannana. Didn't Angie have one in her store from Nordies?? or H&M?

My body type sounds similar to yours and I found some at Nordstroms last year about this time on sale. I'm very happy with my choice of DKNY black sateen single-breased trench with tie belt. It has a detail of slightly gathered sleeves at the cuff that is sweet. On sale it was about $100 I think. My criteria included a trench that would cover knee-length skirts and that could be dressed up or down as I wanted to be able to wear it for dressier occasions. If you get black, go for a sateen type fabric because lint and hair don't stick to it.

Thank you all for the good ideas! Kate, I love North Face quality and didn't know they made a trench. That would even be a trench coat I could wear to the dog park! The only downside is that it isn't the classic trench look. But I like this line of thinking, maybe Patagonia or REI has something too.

I like the ideas of Ann Taylor, JCrew and DKNY also. If I can try one on in person I can probably find a good deal on Ebay too.

Kristine, I could also suggest Talbots. I have a red trenchcoat from 2008, it's sort of shiny, knee-length, belted. Extremely functional. I think every year they have a version of this, even now (in neutral colors).

Check out the Gallery label (Nordstrom's carries it). Gallery makes well-constructed classic trenchcoats and you may be able to find one in a classic color (although their fashion colors last year were lovely, especially the rich purple--http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3031876?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=keywordsearch&keyword=Gallery&origin=searchresults).

I have two trenches/raincoats ( one short, one long ) and my mom and sister each have one also from Travelsmith.com that we love ! You also have the option of getting liners for more versatlity :
