Inverted triangles out there - what do you wear?

Okay, now that Angie has ruled on my body type, who else is an IT? I'd love to check out outfits... I always feel a little unbalanced in skinnies unless my top is either really voluminous and pyramid/swing shaped, or more fitted to show some shape.

How are cowlnecks? I found this one that looks nice and am prepared to spend for the price (also, I have an identical hat!):

IT is my secondary body type. Hourglass is my primary body type, but I tend to look more to the ITs for guidelines because they have more, and then just ignore a couple (ie I wear pencil skirts).

I follow all of the "Softening your shoulders" guidelines and avoid: rigid fabrics, shoulder details, cap sleeves, horizontal stripes, most collars, chunky knits (and bulky sweatshirts). It basically means that I tend to keep it simple on top, and (also thanks to my short neck) wear a lot of basic knit v-neck t-shirts.

For skinnies, I would recommend somewhat structured jackets and blazers with a defined waist. That way it gives the impression of having more hips, and looks more balanced. I personally choose fitted looks over voluminous looks, but I think you can rock both if you want to.

I avoid puffed sleeves, padded shoulders, and boat necks (and sleeveless tops with skinny straps for other reasons, but they're also not good for ITs) and that's about it. I don't mind if my shoulders look wider than my hips -- I just try not to exaggerate the fact that they are.

There are quite a few of us around--I think Kellygirl (an IT) had a thread recently "calling all linebackers/swimmer-builds" for opinions about where we got nice white button-down shirts.

I tend to avoid boatnecks, and I certainly won't wear ruffly cap sleeves, but otherwise I tend to do my own thing. Like April, I don't really mind that my shoulders are wider than my hips (I'm actually more sensitive about downplaying my bosom, but that's another topic :).

Thanks ladies! And glad I'm not the only one who doesn't mind the wide shouldered look. Still, I have always avoided padded/poofy shoulders, boatnecks, and anything adding to the linebacker look. I'm also not a big fan of collared shirts or cap sleeves.

Alaskagirl, I am a former IT, but my second child decided my hips needed to be wider, and despite my losing all the baby weight, the hips don't appear to have any intention of returning to their former configuration. But back in the day, I used to strive for a "feminine but not fussy" look by wearing the necklines you and everyone else describe. I found that scooped necks and cowlnecks were better than v-necks, even, and if you're interested you should stock up now while they're in plentiful supply, because there was a period of about six or seven years where I couldn't find them. I also stayed away from collared shirts, but I don't know if that was a shoulder thing or a neck thing. I just know that they didn't/don't look great on my frame. Oh, and I *love* the way halters look on broad shouldered ladies. I used to wear halters made from woven fabrics (fun batik prints) and jeans all summer long. Halter dresses too. Not all that helpful for fall in Alaska, I realize.

I think a cowlneck would depend on how it lies. That one flows down in a soft almost V. If the color contrasts your skin it would give some gentle colorblocking that would break up the width of your shoulders/chest.

It's really not a bad shape to have as you can wear all kinds of pants and there are plenty of ways to be sure you don't exaggerate your shoulder width.

You have to kind of balance your top and bottom. If I go too full at the top with skinny jeans I feel like I look like a big elf. But wearing either wider pant legs or boots with skinnies seems to break up that effect.
