I never paid any attention to the story… but I’m watching the 60 min YouTube now… and I’m all wait a minute… so the Vanity Fair photo editor who got stuck with the Moroccan vacation bill which was more than a year of her salary… which was $62K (the vacation that is)… this photo editor was living in NYC on less than $62K? And an all expenses paid grand trip seemed a reasonable thing to expect?

I find Miss Anna annoying to listen to, and disturbing, but I’m also thinking she’s kinda right…

It’s also very interesting to see how Anna styled herself for her arts foundation promo booklet… the glasses and straight hair…

It's funny about Anna's speaking style. People made fun of Julia Garner for doing a terrible accent, but my sister tells me the real Anna speaks exactly like that.

Our favorite thing to quote in her accent is, "You're so basic."

Ok, I’m still not sure what the connection to Craddick is, but the notes to Quinta’s second link give basics on who Anna was: by pretending she was a German heiress (mustve gotten the accent wrong), she got people to give her money (I’m guessing she claimed she’d repay them when the old goat died & she got her cash). Went to prison for it & still didn’t care. Here’s a screenshot of the notes, for anyone else who’d like to be clued in.

@SF: My husband & i watched the entire series, & I have read a lot about her. I have never been a person content with an abbreviated “Clif Notes” version of anything. I’m a reader & prefer to know all the nitty gritty details.

Anna’s Arts Foundation look is really different from her 60 minutes look, where she goes kinda Ivana-Kardashian. I think it’s hilarious that she gets out of Rikers and gets an Instagram and a Netflix deal. The more I think about it, the more I think she does have a genuine ‘product’ that people absolutely do put a money value on. Her problem was she didn’t incorporate soon enough. Should have started with Instagram videos. It’s fascinating she started with a magazine editor and arts foundation: that’s so intellectual.

@rachylou: She definity is smart. She went about it all wrong, though. Had she chosen a better path, I believe she could have been successful. That said, it’s disturbing to me that she still thinks she did nothing wrong,

eh, before I go get the “gritty details” on something, I want to have a clue what it’s about. That’s why I asked you the first time. Some of us just aren’t so cool as to know what all you hip cats are doing.

But I’m curious why you think she isn’t successful now, if her goal was to make money and be famous. A trip through Rikers sounds unpleasant, but distinguishes her from many other YouTubers. Is she making bank?

The psychoanalyst lady was interesting too - about how folks celebrate a good con and because we feel Anna was conning cons, it’s ‘ok’. I’m vaguely remembering the social media chatter at the time and a lot of people harshed on the Vanity Fair photo editor because she indeed was trying to cop a free vacation - a con conning a con who got conned by the con she was trying to con. Two low level people to boot going at it. It was disturbing also that the victim didn’t see she was also a victimizer who just… lost.

Also: does NYC seem to be filled with these peeps or what? Like top to bottom. Of course it goes on everywhere - Craddick / Australia, Holmes / California… but New York feels so special. And Germany… why is Germany always lurking in the background?

@SF: I have never been described as a cool cat by anyone. I’m simply avperson who likes to read, watch videos & documentaries, & search for as much information as I can get my hands on pertaining to any subject I wish to know more about. I also love discussions with others. Like I said, I’m not into Clif Notes. If a subject interests me, I start digging for more information. That’s all.

SF, Anna actually grew up in Germany. That’s where she’ll be deported to. I feel she should stay here tho. Lol. I mean this is the place for this sort of thing… also: I feel there is a Germany-NYC-psycho-aetherial connection now, ripe for a footnote in a screwball science fiction fantasy magick steampunk novel a la Terry Pratchett…

@SF: She was caught & went to prison. That’s not successful in my book. You’d have to watch the series or read the book to understand the extent of her crimes.

@SF: That’s still not successful in my book. She’s a well-known con artist now. The takeaway is that she knew how to dress & act the part to steal $$$. I have never respected or envied people like her. It’s the same as every other convicted criminal who gets a book &/or movie deal by sharing his/her story. They still aren’t good, moral people.

Anna was keen to protect her image at all costs – not wearing court-supplied clothing or clothes that are not freshly cleaned and steamed. She would rather be seen as a criminal than ruin her image, and isn’t that the secret of the long-range con – that you can never slip out of character? Who knows if she wasn’t looking to the future, that she wanted to rebuild the same kind of life she had.

That point is preceded by description of style changes she made for different persons, and is followed by a pitch for the blogger’s program to help people figure out their own personal style.

Of course style serves a purpose. That’s why WNTW was such a successful TV show, Stacy London & Clinton Kelly essentially educated people on how to dress for success in a very entertaining way.

What really interests me is the specifics… the style she used to steal from *other cons.* My cousin jokes that when they see a person roll up in a BMW, they draw the curtains and put out the ‘Closed’ sign, because that’s a customer with no money who wants to spend big money. The irony of course is my cousin drives a BMW himself!

The deportation jail is different-ie, she’s not in Rikers anymore. Anna says deportation jail is really boring, not like Rikers, which experience she treasures.
