Interview update - YouLookFab Forum

My interview today went really well--I have a meeting tomorrow with the 2 people I'd be working with. The last person in the position didn't meld with the job or the team too well, so the team wants to meet me to see if they think I'd be a good fit. They seem to want to fill the opening quickly so I expect I'll know pretty soon after the second meeting.

I wore my new suit, black pumps, CZ studs, and the yellow silk DKNY top from Ana (tucked in). The suit has a teeny tiny bit of yellow to it, so I think the top worked well and added a bit of colour, which I thought was fitting since this was an interview with an art institute. I'll probably wear the exact same thing tomorrow since I'll be meeting with different people in a different location and will try to take a pic because I finally found my camera.

If I get this job I'll be working THREE jobs for a while since I have a web design contract to finish out and another ongoing part-time job (that I do from home) that I plan to keep. Crazy!

As far as working 3 jobs...just don't let your jobs get in the way of your YLF posting. (hee hee) Actually, I've been working 2 part time jobs for the last month and a half, and I've actually really enjoyed it. (granted, the two jobs together are only about 17 hours a week). But it really forces me to keep a routine in place.

I do better when I'm busy too, Nicole, and I'm sure a routine will be totally key for me. I've already been brainstorming! I'll have to cut back on my cooking, that's for sure, at least until I finish the web design contract, so I'm working on a list of really fast dinners and lunches.

I've been sending out resumes and networking like crazy but have had no actual interviews in a while. The last time I had an official interview I felt overdressed, but professional. I'm in a somewhat creative field (copywriting) and I saw one young woman who was interviewing for a graphic design position in jeans! I guess that's acceptable now in certain fields? I could never do it, even if that's what they wear day to day on the job. For an interview it would feel so wrong! But then again, I'm a bit older so maybe I don't know the new rules? I wore nice separates for a "suit" look but it wasn't an actual suit. It was also about 95 degrees that day, so it wasn't fun wearing a jacket, but you do what ya gotta do!

LOL Tarzy, I have never, ever heard of a situation where it's OK to show up to an interview in jeans! I bet that girl didn't get the job. Good luck with your job-hunting. If this works out for me I'll feel incredibly lucky to have had a job fall into my lap, especially in this economy.

The second "interview" (it was more like a meeting) felt to me like it went really well too. The job sounds fantastic and the people that would be on the same team as me are great. Fingers triple-crossed--hopefully I'll hear something soon.

I went to Holt Renfrew and tried on some shoes after the interview, since the black pumps I currently have KILL my feet, and I have no other work shoes. I fell for these Cole Haan ones in black patent:

The heel is low-ish and the Nike Air technology seems to make a big difference.

Unfortunately, they're $330 at HR, not $185! If I get the job I might see if I can arrange to have them shipped to my sister's boyfriend's brother in Seattle and get my sister to bring them up for me next time they visit. They don't have them on the Canadian Zappos.

Tarzy, a lot of graphic designers seem to think that being in a creative field entitles them to be casual and "different." I disagree, FTR. Wish I lived in your area because I'd apply for that job, and from the sound of it I would probably get it!

I think graphic designers definitely have a lot more freedom to look a bit more fun and playful, and I think wearing a suit is almost as much of a misstep as wearing jeans (unless you're applying to be a creative director or some other kind of management position). I wore a big bold necklace to my interview that might not have gone down well in another field, but without it, my outfit seemed too conservative for a creative job.

Brianna, I really hope things work out! It sounds like a great opportunity for you, and then you can reward yourself by getting those pretty shoes Post pics soon!
