Interesting tip from my hairdresser

After a recent haircut, I was trying to puzzle out what she used in my hair that smelled so good and seemed to give it a pleasant weight and pieciness, yet the hair remained highly touchable. It turns out, that although the shop sells many expensive products, the secret was hand cream. Tames fly-away and creates piece-iness. Now I have to find out which one it was. In the mean time I have been using classic Nivea, and folks, it is a long, long way from the worst thing I have put in my hair. When my hair is freshly washed, the baby hairs tend to go off in all directions, especially on my part. Moisturize your hands and then use the extra to smooth down your hair. I don't think this would work well for people with oily scalps, but just throwing this one out there. It doesn't kill my undying love for Kerastase Oleo Relax serum, but it's a nice (and cheap) supplement.

Has anyone else heard of or tried this?

*raises hand* I don't purposefully apply hand cream to my hair, but my entire adult life I have smoothed my hands from my mid-shaft through ends after I use hand cream. Just gives it some extra oomph. Jonathan Product Silky Dirt is my favorite product specifically designed for this purpose.

By the way, I love Kerastase as well.

It's a great product. If you are looking for more defined and piece-y, you might want to try the regular Dirt, but I find Silky Dirt provides a softer texture just like second day hair.

very interesting... especially given the fact that I purposefully do my hair product BEFORE my face moisturizer as to not get the residual moisturizer on my hair. Perhaps I should re-think my method.
Does she do this before or after drying your hair?

Queen Mum, she does this as the final step, after straight ironing.

DressLover, I did have Dirt at one point, but it was a little too, dirty? I wish I still had it actually because sometimes i would like it, but it is missing. Possibly I had a fit of cleaning and decided I didn't use it enough. Silky Dirt sounds like more what I was looking for--a little more care and a little pieceiness.

I don't think Sephora carries it anymore, but if you have a salon near you that has Jonathan Product try to get a sample. A very tiny bit goes a long way so a sample should last for several experiments.

Scarlet, you've got a very smart hairdresser, and I've got to try this on my fine hair. I, too, love Kerastase products and haven't used the serum you mentioned above. It is a luxury product, isn't it!? But, oh so nice of a line. Funny, of all days, today I tried almond oil on the very tips to see what that would be like as my hair (the air and weather maybe?) seemed dry. So, we must thinking alike! Great tip.

I remember my friend using Lubriderm (I think that was the brand it was) on her hair way back in the 90's. It even said on the bottle that you could use it that way. Sometimes I do this with lotion.

I've done this with the classic Nivea cream for years! My mum has always used Nivea creme for both her skin and her hair and she tamed my hair that way when I was little.

I do do this. But then, it's funny, I also feel it makes my hair kinda dirty.

Wow, I have to try this. The day I wash my hair it's always kind of frizzy and flyaway, while on day two it's perfect. Considering I wash my hair every other day, that makes 50% unsatisfying hair!

I moisturize my face then do my hair; so I guess there's moisturizer in my hair too!

I have never done this - maybe should - but I know some hair product companies make a product which is a moisterizer cream for the hair. You apply it to dry hair just like you would hand cream to your hand. It works really well especially in the winter when inside homes become so dry.

I've heard that you can use conditioner as a styling cream on dry hair, too, in a pinch. I think my hair gets too greasy too easily for this to work well - or my lotions are too hefty! Even though I am a cheapskate, I *love* bumble & Bumble Brilliantine - does the same sort of thing with creating shine, taming flyaways and giving a little pieceyness, and for me at least it never turns into 'god, wash your hair already, you greasehead'.

I've never heard of this but I'm going to try it. The only tip I now for hair, is dry shampoo. When I take the time and do a proper blow out on my hair, if I use dry shampoo every night I can go two days (and sometimes squeak a third) before having to wash. And that's with an oily scalp.

Rachylou - maybe your hair doesn't need the extra moisture?

Astrid - good to know. Nivea seems to be the best for this purpose, so far in my experimenting.

Saretta - that's exactly what I am fighting too.

Krishnidoux - I have tried a product like that from Phyto but didn't feel like it made much difference for me. Also it seems to be watery and makes my hair curl. Maybe I need a thicker product, but a thinner one is better for others.

Laura, I have heard that about conditioner too, but the idea always seemed yucky to me. Also I thought conditioner still contains some cleansing ingredients to help it wash out. Not sure about that though. Thanks for the tip about Brilliantine. I always like to hear what products people really love.

Lisa, I recently discovered the joys of dry shampoo myself. Comes in really handy sometimes.

Sounds like a reasonable suggestion! It does make sense...Hmmm, maybe I'll have to try this....
