Like you used to, by type. So I can find it quickly when I'm half awaken in the morning.
Every now and then, I like to pull everything out on my bed and look at the colours together. It gives me new outfit ideas. I then try out outfits and when I find one, I write down every element on a little notebook, down to the jewels, shoes, purse, and even outerwear. I name my outfit with the feel I get from it. I guess I could also simply take a pic of myself. In the morning it is then easy to consult the notebook and pick an outfit, especially if there is a name. For example, "Casual Flower Child" or "Femme-Femme". It helps me remember and select something appropriate for where I'm going. I wouldn't pick "Casual Flower Child" for work, for example.
(Again, a pic would be more simple. But I enjoy naming outfits).
I have tried for years to rely solely on my wardrobe in the morning to inspire me. Alas! It has never served me well. Too many rushed departure with "nothing to wear" and settling for less-than-satisfactory get-ups at the last minute. Building outfits in advance works much better for me.
About hanging: adding more rails to my life has made it much happier! Larger, wider, easy to open IKEA drawers have made a big difference in keeping frustration level low in the morning. I now dedicate my older chester for non-clothes items or gym clothes, which are never a problem.
