Infatuation with stripe skirt

It's really not 'my' style so I can't figure out why for the last month or two, I've been totally infatuated with the look. I've gotten rid of an aline skirt for what it does to my high hip and only have one that I like and wear (the white J Crew) as it seems to kind of float away from my hips. So why the strong pull toward this one?? I don't really even do stripes. Hmmmmmm . . . style expansion or something I should just admire on others?

The "circus stripe" is totally on-trend, IMO. Or a trend I'm zeroing in on, let's put it that way. I think of you as being on-trend, but not stiff. So a stripey skirt in a less tailored style would work, I think, if you wanted to do it. Which you may not; there's a certain preppiness about it which might give you feelings of ambivalence.

Rachy, I think you may be on to something. It's the wide stripe that is refreshing to my eye. Maybe I should be looking for a softer fabrication. Are stripes preppy by nature? Is that why I steer clear of them for the most part? Hmmm. I do have my jailbird stripe top that is fine, but certainly not a love. Let's put it this way, it's not getting packed for FL lol.

Oh I get you, I was totally obsessed with the verticle stripe jeans/slacks from spring....I cannot explain it, it drew me. I used the exercise of trying to envision 5 items I can use it with. And making 2-3 outfits and have places to wear them.

I think you should try out stripes. The inherent hourglass shape in this profile (fitted top flowy skirt) is what I think attracts you to it and why you look good in it.

I thought (3 or 4 years ago) that horizontal stripes looked juvenile on me but then I got over myself and tried a few things on and was shocked at the slimming effect.

I steer away from stripes myself due to the association with preppy style, yet I somehow don't see that in the broad stripes and flare of that skirt. I does have a different vibe.

I'd try a few of them on if possible and see how they look in person. You look great in the white skirt so if you can find a similar shape in stripes, maybe it would work. There are other stripes aside from black/white - or are you stuck on the black and white design? I ask because I think that a subtle color variation might be better for your style.

Well like Rachy I see them as circus or Tim Burton stripes so I don't thinl they are only for the, preppy. And I think an a line in a softer, shorter incarnation might work.

Okay, I think I'll make this a FL pursuit where I may be able to try some things on in person. Tex, I did eye both of these skirts but find them very ladylike. I am with CocoLion. I think you'd look amazing in a skirt like this and it would be very fun.

I like the example you showed because she has long wavy hair like yours. The contrast of wavy hair with bold stripe is fun and less expected, somehow.

Mo, I found this interesting article that kind of demonstrates why I think maybe a stripe with lower contrast might be better for you. It gives some great pictorial examples and taught me a few things.

Thanks for linking to my blog post, Texstyle! Always a pleasure to have my name come up on this fine blog! I've been on a stripe crusade myself, not sure why, I don't even like stripes, normally. However, if the silhouette is right, they can be very flattering, fresh and, yes, contrast is a helpful tool.

However, the amount of contrast worn away from the face isn't as important to follow as it is when it is near the face. Regardless, learning about contrast and how it effects you is a great tool to have!
