Indian luncheon - need dress suggestions.

I am not even making this up. So, here's the story - one of my childhood neighbors is getting married to a boy I sort-of dated in college!

Since it is an Indian party, I think some bling is expected. The event is a luncheon so I can get away with minimal shine and go with some sort of festive brightly colored dress.

I am guaranteed to be bloated because of some medication I am taking so something with tummy concealing abilities will be nice. Sleeves will be a plus. No black or white.

All of this is rather new to me. I have never attended a fancy Indian party. Am I thinking through this okay? Any other advice on how to dress and/or dress suggestions will be most helpful.

elpgal, why is the "obvious" not an option? some sort of Indian clothing--salwar kameez or saree? the salwar kameez especially would be forgiving of stomach bloat. All the Indian functions I've ever been to, or heard of, even at the level of luncheons, involve people dressing up in Indian clothing. Not that I don't encourage you to wear Western clothing if that's what you feel more comfortable in, but was just curious why that's off the table.

C1, I forgot to add that I am intimidated by sarees and the only saree I own is currently in India (left it there to be dry-cleaned). All my salwar-kameez are block-printed plain cotton (think Fabindia). I know of one local store that sells Indian clothing but I am not entirely sure what sort of merchandise they stock; the window displays feature a lot of skimpily clad mannequins in nylon sarees. I figured a dress would be easier to shop for but I may be kidding myself.

A block-printed plain cotton salwar-kameez would be just fine. In fact, it will give you an excuse to pile on the bling to compensate - earrings, bangles, statement necklace.

Otherwise any sort of nice dress would work. There will be people there in jeans and t-shirts, especially the men. *sigh*

elpgal, the block printed salwar kameezes sound fine to me, too! If you do some tasteful day makeup (if you're into wearing makeup at all) and have some nice accessories, like Sylvie said, I think you'll be fine. And as a plus, they'll cover all bloat issues, which a lot of western dresses won't.

Hey, I am Indian and not very fond of bling - so I generally am amongst the most underdressed in gatherings such as this. If it is a luncheon then I'm guessing there won't be too much bling at the do. I'd give a sari a skip too.
A cotton salwar kameez would work if you can wear a nice statement necklace or pair of earrings or even a brightly coloured festive stole combined with some nice bangles. If you by any chance have anything in silk that should be perfect.
However if you think you want to stick to a nice dress or a dressy skirt, you could do that too. Maybe if you have a nice skirt in bright colours, you can team that up with a beaded necklace, maybe even add a bindi to bring in that little Indian touch. Good luck!

Sowmya, I do have a skirt that might work - it is a knee length yellow-orange skirt with some mirror work and little bells. I usually pair it with a black fitted top since it is a bit voluminous. If I can find a non-black top for it, it will likely work.
