I love looking at fashion sketches almost as much as looking at the finished garment. I can't link directly to them, but here are some proposed designs for Barack and Michelle Obama (scroll down):

I was not particularly taken with either of the Christian Lacroix designs. That little bustle bow at the back of the first one particularly alarmed me, and the second one looks more like a coat than a dress. My favorite, by far, is the DVF dress. It is stunning and elegant and I think the white would look beautiful on Michelle's dark skin.

As for the suits, I was amused by the idea of the next president being covered in crystals...but I don't think I'd go for it. Interesting thought though. I think I like the Ferragamo suits the most. The slight sheen is evening-appropriate without being flamboyant and over the top like the crystals, and the pinstripe suit is professional and sophisticated. However, I know nothing of suits and menswear in general, so my opinion is based strictly on what I like and dislike.

I'm smitten with that DVF dress though. I just wonder if it looks too much like a wedding dress.

ooh, how chic! i love how grand the sketches are! i love how each designer has their own way of drawing people - i wish i were a better sketcher! although i find it humorous that they always give people twigs for legs and arms!

some of the designs are probably a little impractical (especially the sparkly tuxedo!) but lovely none the less. i also love the white dress, though white doesn't seem right - too bridal. i could totally see her rocking something in grey or silver though!

The DVF dress is lovely. I also wonder if it looked less like a wedding dress if the silk were silvery color. I also really like the coat-like outfit, too and I am not sure if it's supposed to be for daytime proceedings? I don't really know about suits, but they are an exciting couple to dress.

I always thought that that red Laura Bush dress looked very matronly. I am not sure if it's the body type thing, or the style in general. Michelle is definitely taller and more shapely and more glamorous, so I am not trying to compare, it's just they could have done a better job.

I am also a big fan of the DVF dress ( no surprise there), but agree that a light color other than white would be better. I do not like that red dress LB wore a single bit.

I thought the little squiggle legs were funny too Shell. It looks like he sketched the outfit and then said "oops forgot the legs AGAIN!"

It would be great if the dress were a very light silver or a peachy color.

Laura Bush's dress was very unfortunate, I think largely because of the sleeve length. I know it's cold but she was indoors so a wrap of some sort could have remedied that. The matching shoes were also a bit too much.

I think they make an interesting couple to dress because most presidents and first ladies are not as young and tend to have a more conservative style (regardless of party :p).
