Inaugural fashion thread

I will say that black coats don't work on camera as well as red, blue, and other colors. Is Michele's coat yellow? I just caught a glimpse of her coming in; I wasn't sure if she had a coat on or not.

Hilary Clinton's blue coat looks so much better than Rosalyn Carter's and Barbara Bush's black coats. Hilary much have a lot of clothes on under her coat because she looks really bulky -- I guess that's how to deal with cold weather but not wear a puffer coat! Both first president Bush and Barbara are wearing purple scarves which brightens up their coats a bit -- and did you see that George H.W. Bush is wearing a yellow turtleneck with his purple scarf (someone recently was asking about purple and yellow).

Aretha Franklin's hat.... Wow! *covet*...

Not that I'd have any occasion to ever wear something like that... but I continue to wonder why so few people are wearing hats.

Hats should come back in fashion!

Laura, I would call it cobalt blue, but Jcrew calls this color "Majestic Purple." It's the perfect color for the occasion, I think.

Oh fun. I'm loving the Obama girls, they look so pretty and colorful and they look like they're having the day of their life.

Just saw Michelle, and I'd say I've seen her look better. I love that she wears yellow and makes such a bright statement. But in general I think she doesn't do as great "under pressure" (election nite, today) fashion-wise as she does for lower-key occasions like being on the campaign trail. (Okay, "lower key" is a very relative term ;-))

I like the bow at her empire waist. Not sure I like the green gloves though. She is a beautiful woman and those kids are too.

Yellow was a good choice - she stands out in the crowd. I wonder if yellow will be super-popular this spring? (Too bad I can't wear it at all... )

Laura Bush must be freezing -- her coat doesn't look like much of a coat as much as an ensemble piece with the dress. I like the style but not the pale gray so much. I like Jill Biden's simple red coat -- she stands out as well but doesn't compete with Michelle Obama (which would probably be a fashion faux pas in this situation).

Here's a much better version of the picture. I love the green stilettos!

Also, FYI the dress is by cuban-american designer Isabel Toledo. Michelle just went to the store and bought it instead of contacting the designer directly. Pretty neat... Oh and the designer's name for the color is "Lemongrass", though the press has been calling it anything from pale yellow to gold.

Wow, that's a gorgeous photo. I must say it's looking much better now. On TV her outfit doesn't work as well for me; I don't find the color optimal for her and don't like the shape of the coat so much (I like her in very tailored clothes with strong waist definition.) But the photo makes it look stunning, so I'm revising my first impressoin

Antje, I also wasn't sure about the head-to-toe yellow - and initially it looked like a big pile of sequins (too much glitz for daytime) - but when they showed a close-up the outfit has a a lot of texture and depth going on, so the outfit grew on me.

I think Michele wears yellow very well - curious why you don't think so?

Yes, I think she wears yellow well, but this tone of yellow seemed too pale to me at first. But I really have to reconsider this now that I saw the photo. Our TV is really crappy and distorts colors. E.g., the gloves looked really bad to me at first, but now on the PC I see them and like them.
