I have a desperately-needed hair appointment tomorrow, and I'm struggling with exactly what to do with it. I've sported a bob since July and I'm largely pleased with it except for one thing; I find it a touch short, as do my family and Corey. I've often heard that I look best when my hair has a bit of length. I can't go too long or it turns into a stringy, lifeless mop. I need to find a way to maintain my ideal length (anywhere between my chin and collarbone) while maintaining a modern, sophisticated look. My stylist thinks my current bob looks best when cut short. Do you agree? If so, what else should I consider?
Also, yea or nay to a few lighter highlights?

Highlights are always fun, Michelle. Try them!
And how about a longer bob? Just tell your stylist you want to experiment with a bit of length. If it doesn't work, you can cut it next time.
I don't have a bob, but I started out with a tapered haircut (shorter in back) that was pretty short. I have grown it out to almost shoulder length now. The back is shorter than the front still, but it's longer over-all. I like my hair shorter, but I just wanted to try this for awhile.
The great thing about hair is that it will always grow back, or you can always cut it off if you don't like how something turned out.

Michelle, I would actually like to see you with a bit more length. I think people can be weird about it, though- there seems to be an understanding among women that anywhere between the chin and shoulders is an "awkward" or "in-between" length and many people seem adverse to it. It's actually best for me- any shorter than my chin and my curl takes a lot of coaxing, any longer than my shoulders and it starts to get weighed down.

I'd just ask your stylist for a bit more length this time- say you just want to try it out. It can always be cut again!

I'm not a fan of highlights in hair as dark as yours unless they are subtle. You might try a bob that is short in back and longer in front than it is now. I recently had mine cut shorter and a bit layered in back. The layering in back makes wearing collars easier and looks more stylish but takes longer to style each morning because it needs to be fussed with to not look choppy, to my eye anyway.

All the ladies had great ideas...easy to manage is the key as well as great looking !! Joy had some good advice on the type of cut, and Sara is right about highlights...as long as you keep them subtle... you should also benifit from the texture highlights add...Have fun and post so we can enjoy your new FAB look:)

Seriously. as I said... something super chic but super easy for you:)
I would like to see a very clean layered A-line, or graduated bob on you. These are shorter and sort of stacked in the back, they graduate longer towards the front. In other words the sides are longer than the back. Soft layers all round. You can adjust the overall length of this to a place that is comfortable for you...it needn't be short. It can fall above the jaw or far below, but always above the collerbone at it's longest point for the best outcome:)

I think we have ruled out bangs for you on a prior thread...just too much maintenance.
Some subtle highlights around your face and texturizing all round ..some mouse..blow dry your parimeter first with a large/med round brush, then focus on the interior. You can alway tuck one or both behind your ear, or add a headband for added interest and texture. Then of course I would take you to lunch and show you off!!!:)

Definition question, ladies.. Can someone please describe a stacked bob? Is that just a term to describe a lot of layers at the back? Because if so I think that's what I've got. The front is longer, currently just below my chin.

It sure does, thanks Taylor! It sounds *a lot* like the cut I've been getting for the past few months, though admittedly it doesn't look like that now. I'll ask her tomorrow.

Michelle, your hair might not be stacked enough. That's how my hair was last time I cut it. My stylist just didn't want to bring it short enough in the back, so instead of looking cool and edgy, it just looked like a boring soccer mom bob. I don't feel comfortable with hair that goes above my chin though. Like you, I prefer some length. I don't like my chin line so I need hair to distract from it, but when it's too long in the back, it's just harder to maintain. It sounds like you might just need to take the back layers up.

Hair is a a lot more personal than clothes, but I'd be more than happy to dig up some pictures for you to show your stylist if you trust me! I'm sure others will pitch in as well. I promise I won't send you off with a mullet or anything.

Hahahaha! Maya, I know you wouldn't pull the ylf equivalent of punk'd. If you feel like dredging up a photo or two by all means go ahead, but only if you feel like it/ have time to kill/something similar!! From what I've gleaned my style is not quite as edgy as yours, but a modern, fuss-free and chic hairstyle is crucial!

Excellent Idea Maya!! And good point. The stacking must be done just so to optimize the weight line...too many layers remove the stacking...some wedges from the 70's are a good example...Dorothy Hammil comes to mind the original stacked wedge. I know you don't want a wedge, just an example of stacking:)

I'm new to this posting thing:) I'd like to comment on your hairstyle, but I don't see a pic of you anywhere. Am I missing something?
