In search of a classic trench coat

Hi all. Need your help in finding a classic trench coat.

What defines the classic look? Is it: the color? single or double breasted? belted? black buttons or beige to match? Long or short? short collars?

I found a few on Ebay but they are bit different. I've attached the photos. I really like the no name modern trench #8), but I still want a classic one too.

Which ones do you like?

Hiya, I really like #5 ... I have to say, I think the color is key to the classic look, as well as the double-breated style. I'd probably browse the Burberry site for inspiration and then try to find something with a similar look. Have fun shopping!

The most traditional are like the ones literally worn in the trenches. The original Burberry type with a double breasted collar that can be buttoned all the way up with a gun flap and belted waist. I think contrasting buttons look more classic to me, although I can't say why at the moment. I like #5 the best from the photos, but sometimes the fits can be really different. You can find some inexpensive Burberry ones on Ebay, though you have to be careful about knockoffs. Brooks Brothers makes wonderful ones, too.

I like #1. When I think of classic, i think double breasted, gun flaps, belt, mid-thigh to knee length, and contrasting buttons, as Rae said. I prefer #1 over #5 because the column of buttons tapers in the former, giving the appearance of a slimmer silhouette. It could just be the photo, though.

I agree with rae. I would also expect a belt buckle not just a tie belt.

Oh interesting. I had to look up 'gun flap' because somehow I'd never come across it before. #5 sppesls to me most but I'm no expert on what is the most traditional look.

Tortontogirl - I'll have to check out the Burberry trench for comparison purposes (although I'm sure it's way beyond my price range).

Rae - thanks for the background info. I'll keep that in mind.

gradfashionista - I like a slimmer silhouette. Hmm decisions, decisions.

I need to find one with a belt buckle.

What Rae said style wise. In my previous search for trench coats I found the Brooks Brothers to be best value for money if Burberry is out of your budget. Wait for a sale. They might even be on sale right now.

What Rae said. I don't know what your budget is but I have had my Burberry trench coat for 10 years and I expect it will last for the rest of my life. I will leave it to my niece in my will. It is that good! My DH inherited his Aquascutum from his grandfather. He also inherited a London Fog from his grandfather.
