Impulse boots buy and confessions: UPDATE, they are being returned.

Well I don't know if it was totally impulse.

I have been wanting a pair of tan/cognac tall heeled boots for a while. They can be very expensive so I have been stalking the end of winter sales. I saw these on sale on Country Road this morning and ordered them. I can struggle with tall boots fit in the calf but I thought it was worth trying.

I have had four other pairs of Country Road shoes and boots with 100% success - great quality, comfort and fit. I feel this is a classic style. I do not have any tall boots and only three pairs of ankle boots, dating from 2010, 2013 and 2014. They are all in good shape still.

If I end up keeping them between this and the new wool coat I will be well over the budget for the winter....gulp....especially since I have also bought three new tops from my sewing friend and gulp...a pair of shorts (that were pricey). And yesterday I went to a lingerie sale and came home well stocked.

The lingerie was needed, I only have one pair of decent shorts (that cost $4), the coat was a HEWI, the tops were all reasonably priced...but all the same it has been a splurgey July-early September.

My summer tops, party dresses and footwear are in reasonable shape (aside from practical sandals). I do want one or two more pairs of pants, a new swimsuit and a beach coverup.

I will report back once they arrive.

Well the boots are gorgeous and I hope they fit you well.
It sounds like all the other purchases (perhaps other then tops) were really needed and thus OK. Plus winter stuff is always more expensive. Enjoy your new goodies!

The tops were not needed but such pretty colours and patterns!! I must do some WIW.

The coat, lingerie and shorts well well planned wardrobe additions, as would the boots be. Shopping does come in stages sometimes doesn't it?

You may be over budget, but it doesn't sound like you've been extravagant, at all. Don't beat yourself up, enjoy! I hope the boots work out.

I hope so too as they met all my needs (colour, 70s feel, leather for wet days, heeled for skirts and dresses but not too high).

I see myself wearing them with midi skirts and dresses mainly.

I love when I click through to see someone's purchase and I can immediately imagine how they'd look on. These boots are so YOU. I think they'll be great and have some longevity in your wardrobe.

I just ordered a few new building block pieces, and an unnecessary end-of-summer sale piece, so I sympathize on the splurge-y feeling. I think some months on the edges of seasons are just naturally more expensive than the mid-season ones where we're happily enjoying our purchases.

Yes Jenn I think we both like a tight wardrobe that we can wear all items regularly but with good variety. But as you say there are these times when you have to seize the moment - the boots won't get much wear now (although it is freezing today and there is snow down south right now) but they would get a lot of wear next year....

Those are lovely. Great colour. I hope they work out for you. Calf fit can be so tricky on tall boots. I got 2 tops from CR during the spend and save. I am a sucker for that.

What fab boots! I had a pair lke them in the '70s. They got worn a lot.

Sigh. Budgets can be so challenging. I try very hard to adhere to a budget year round. But when something comes up that breaks the budget, I don't beat myself up too bad. From what I read, these are a HEWI for you. I commend you for waiting for season end and then buying on sale. You did well.

Yeah, Jenn nailed it -- transition times of year are expensive, especially when you need to replace key investment pieces like winter coats. I'm in a similar situation this year. My wallet is wincing. But, even the extremely-frugal part of me is willing to admit it's more cost-effective to buy just the right thing, rather than to settle for something less. Cheap isn't necessarily cheap if it gets tossed after one season when we move on in search of better.

Yes I agree- my summer needs are not huge to be honest, I have no special weddings, lots of tops and only a couple of gaps. I just have to rein it in now!!

I guess I will see when the boots arrive- the reality can be quite different from my imagination. I have three looks in mind for them already so I hope they work.

I love your boots. I had boots like that in the 70s. Unfortunately I can't wear heels that high anymore. Boots are investments so the cost is really spread out over a few years. Creative budgeting.

Winter wear is always more expensive. That's the reason I do annual and not seasonal budgeting.
And I always end up shopping a month and go without for 3-4 months.

I'm not sure if this is true for you, but I don't think every season, or even every year, is the same with regard to bigger clothing purchases. Boots and coats are usually the priciest items, but they last several years, if made well.

Absolutely!! In the most part my clothes have good longevity....and my more expensive purchases have usually been my best. Some of my real cheapie purchases have also been great - it is that middle ground where I can get myself into trouble.

The boots should arrive tomorrow so I hope they live up to expectation, if not nothing lost

The boots!!

They arrived last week and eventually I have decided to return them. They are very nice BUT...

1) As Smittie found with her ankle boots, the leather does not have the sheen I want
2) The black heel annoys me a little, I would prefer a block wooden heel.
3) The heel is a little higher than ideal - I would accept it if everything else was perfect.
3) As expected the calf is too tight, I have taken to a cobbler and a gusset is an easy remedy but will cost another $50.

For $270 they start being not a bargain any more, and I can probably find another pair that meets my requirements.

So I am being a maximiser here and holding out for a better pair.
