Important Third Piece - Epic Fail

Update: I returned the jacket. The sleeves are too long, the fabric is thick for Winter, the double-breasted style looks bad on my body shape, & it’s difficult to button.

I came to the realization that my somewhat relaxed wardrobe for retirement needed some structure, so I bought this blazer. I say “somewhat relaxed” because my version of casual is dressier than most. I always feel the need for a third piece.

I always feel the need for a third piece, too. Some lightweight vests might be nice for you.

I absolutely live by the third piece! I'm currently on the hunt for a summer cardigan... light in color and weight and maybe three-quarter or elbow length sleeves. I like having my upper arms covered even in the summer. I'm a real sucker for a great jacket and love your blazer.

Thanks, chewy! I do have kimonos & vests, but all are in soft fabrications. I love them, but felt like I also needed something structured for occasions that call for it. I hope I have chosen the right blazer. I find that I look better in longer length tops, so that was the basis for choosing this style.

Thanks, Allora! On the beach where we’ll be living, it does get cooler & windy for about half of the year, & I like the coverage of a third piece. It’s only hot (as in needing A/C 24/7) for half of the year, particularly June & July.

I’m the same about 3rd pieces. I feel awkward in the summer and never know how to add the contrast a 3rd piece gives.

I think this will be useful for all sorts of occasions where you want to be dressy. I do like a third piece but find pattern or a hat another way to make things feel more put together.

Thanks, Sal. I have plenty of patterns in most of my my tops & in my kimonos, so I wanted a solid colored classic blazer. I do have one really nice hat, but I usually don’t wear a hat at our condo because of the ocean breeze. It can get quite windy. The hat is for calm days.

It’s interesting you mention the third piece. This weekend I put on a lace topper over a sundress to go to the supermarket. Completely non-functional, but I felt a need to ‘finish dressing’ to go outside.

Exactly, Rachylou. Most of the time, that third piece completes an outfit. I have several kimonos & flowy cardigans, but felt the need for a structured piece for funerals, more formal events, etc. where a blazer would be more appropriate. I have 2 sheath dresses that this blazer I’ll work with, in addition to my top + pants outfits.

I also feel the lack in the summer ,maybe that’s why l accessorise more in summer than winter,as compensation for the lack of a third piece.Mind you it’s not often that you can go without a cardi here anyway.l like your jacket.

I’m with Allora. I wear third pieces all year long and make sure I have third pieces for every outfit that are appropriate for the season. A blazer is a good piece. I especially like wearing one with jeans now that things are so casual but liking the dressiness of a blazer.

Joy, you’re right. A blazer looks great with jeans. Gone are the days of having to wear a matched blazer & skirt or pants. I’m not much of a suit person, but I did wear a suit to work all through the ‘80s, with the requisite uncomfortable pumps.

Love a blazer with a casual wardrobe (that is the only way I wear mine). Cannot do third pieces in the hottest part of the year, which is why I try to make my two pieces interesting .

Thanks, CarolS & Jaime. I doubt the blazer will work anywhere in the tropics except in air conditioned spaces or the cooler part of the year, at night when the temps drop.

Do accessories count as a third piece? I often find a scarf or necklace that ties the basic pieces together seems to finish an outfit for me (especially in warmer weather).

I think they might if they’re noticeable enough. I am looking for some yang to add to my yin clothing for occasions that call for a blazer. I hate scarves with a passion (turtlenecks, too), & feel like I need a blazer in my wardrobe. It’s such an easy, quick fix that’s classic. You can do differently, of course.
